Rodney Mitchell, Tyson Gross and Daniel Combs all play at Alice Loyd. Mitchell I beleive is the only player that receives varsity time. The MArtin kid plays at Berea. Im not sure if he receives Varsity Time but i think he plays for their JV. I have no idea where the kid from South Laurel PLays.

Eric Feilds from South Laurel plays for G-Town. Watched him play against Kentucky earlier this season.

I agree with everything you said dubbledribble...except the part about the clevenger kid...he will be a D-3, NAIA player AT BEST. Gilbert from Wolfe IS being recruited by Centre College. He has no shot to play D-1. He is an OUTSTANDING high school player. But not athletic enough to play on that level. At 6'4" he needs to be able to stick his face in the rim or be able to knock it down from 30 feet. I think he is the classic"tweener". Brad Lowe is the best in the 15th...and Maynard is the most talented IMO. Several colleges have inquired about Maynard. The question with him I hear might possibly be academics. Is he good enough to play D-1 basketball? He has D-1 talent...but probably not D-1 work ethic. He is the most naturally talented basketball player at Belfry since Stevin Staton in the early 90's . He played at D-1 Longwood ...and then at NAIA powehouse College of WV...where he was an All- American and averaged around 28 ppg for two seasons.

Another thing thay happens with mountain kids that scare college coaches away is the fact that they have a reputation for not staying... examples would be Todd May, Jody Thompson, Tony Pietrowski, and Shannon Hoskins.

I agree with you Professor in that it takes an exceptional basketball player to make it at the D1 level. It is easier to make D1 playing football because you have 85 scholarships in football compared to 12-15 in basketball. But hey its no shame to play for any of the NAIA type schools you mentioned and actually get to play while getting a free education. I just started this post so people could see how hard it is to make it to that level.

 

 

Actually, there are three to four times as many D-1 college basketball schools, so those available scholarships you are speaking about are real close in comparison.

As well I do, but you must also realize that Gilbert is a totally different player then he was last year. I mean come on he had 42 one game and in the 30's the other. He has scored in the 40's 4 times this year, with only scoring less then 20 one time, and that was against Knott County. If we was basing things on last year, then you really wouldn't think Lee County was the best team in the reigon either now would you. Again do you still think he is not the best player in the reigon. He is 2nd in scoring, 4th or 5th in rebounds in the state. Now tell me one other kid in our region or for that matter east of Lexington putting up those kind of numbers.

I know players that averaged 25 a game that never even played in college.

He will be a very good small college player. D-1 is too high.

I think he is the only D1 prospect in the 14th and I believe he can play small D1 ball but maybe not play as soon as he hits the campus. I watched Gilbert d it up against Hicks who I think is the second best player in the region and he was certainly quick enough to stick it to him once he was switched to guard him. Not big time D1 but small D1 without a doubt. Any NAIA school would sign him today IMO. It takes a much bigger committment to sign D1 because most kids have to realize they are not going to play the first couple of years and sometimes that is hard on young athletes who were stars.

There are no D-1 players in either region and havent been for years. Dont kid yourselves. Most couldnt even play at Pikeville College in a normal year.

 

Mike Hall was a great High School player in the 15th region and he hardly played any their the last 3 years.

 

Our last D-1 player was JR Vanhoose and he was 6-10. We dont have any of those type players.

like I said before, there are players that are capable of playing D-1 they just need their names out there. I think Cody has the ability to play D-1 or WKU wouldn't have offered him. He didnt have a chance to accept as he was second on their list and A.J. Slaughter from Shelby Co. accepted his first. He has the potential all he needs is to get his name out there, plus they offered him before this year started and he has played 20 times better this season so I think he might have a decent chance at going to a D-1 school.

I have to believe if he continues to put the numbers up he has been then he will get recognized no matter where he is from. Take Brandon Stockton, and Josh Carrier neither ever made it to the state tournament. While I would agree that a kid playing for a Lexington school would probably get noticed more, I still do believe that no matter where you play if you are good enough then college coaches will take notice. I am sure Coach Creech is doing everything he can to get his name out there to all of the D1 coaches. I for one have enjoyed watching Cody the three or four times I have seen him play and hope that he will get that offer that he wants and desreves.

Putting 30 on the 14th is not like putting 30 on Lex Cath or the other Lex and Lou teams. That is my point.

I am not bashing this kid as I have not seen him play. I like to promote kids from the mountains not bash them. He is obviously an outstanding player. My point is that our competition is what keeps alot of the mountain kids from playing D-1 in any sport. The camps are an oppurtunity for a kid like this to showcase against D-1 competition and coaches can grade him on those performances. If all we play are each other the gauge is not their when comparing to kids from other schools.

 

Adam Coleman transferred from Millard to Lafayette a few years back. He went from averaging 18 or so in the 15th to around 13 at Lafayette. He had better players around him and didnt have to score so much.
