14th or 15th region D1 Players?

Featured Replies

Do you think he is the best player in the Reigon?

Yes he is.

I was wrong with my earlier statements.

I'll put it this way.....he's the one player in the region that would be on most colleges "it" list. He has stepped his game WAY UP since last year.

I think I read that it had been 5 or 6 years since a player in the 13th,14th,or 15th had played in a D1 game. Does anyone know anything different than that?

That's the point I'm trying to make. There's a lot of kids that are good enough to play at Alice Lloyd, Cumberland, Union, Berea, Pikeville, etc.....but very few D-1 players come out of the mountain regions.

I agree with the professor. Gilbert is an excellent player but I do not see him playing for a divison 1 school. NAIA or some smaller type school would suit Gilbert.

I agree with you Professor in that it takes an exceptional basketball player to make it at the D1 level. It is easier to make D1 playing football because you have 85 scholarships in football compared to 12-15 in basketball. But hey its no shame to play for any of the NAIA type schools you mentioned and actually get to play while getting a free education. I just started this post so people could see how hard it is to make it to that level.

I cant speak for the 14th but in the 15th Brandon May, Brad Lowe and Matt Maynard are the only three seniors that come to mind that would have a shot at it. I dont think any of them are getting looks although if they were it would be small D-1.

May from SC has let himself get too bad out of shape to play at the D-1 level and his team has not played up to expectations. The Maynard kid from Belfry is too little and is getting a bad reputation around the region as to having a bad attitude. Brad Lowe is having a great season and is a very good player but D-1 might be a stretch. He needs let himself go and act like he enjoys the game more. Honestly, I don't see any of the upperclassman playing at the D-1 level. MCCarty from JC might have an outside shot next year if he can stay healthy, I know his dad could play. Landon Slone and the other Paintsville young kids have a good chance. Also the Adams kid, a 6'8 freshmen at Pikeville will get some looks especially if he gets as tall as his dad at around 6'11. Also, another freshmen at Pikeville, Clevenger, might have a shot someday, if he grows and gets a lot stronger. The young kids at SV are nice players as well.

I noticed from some of your posts that you follow June Buchanan pretty good, so what do you think about Clark Stepps ability @ the college level one day???

I think Stepp could play D-1 after 2 more seasons of growing and maturing.....if they can ever pull him a way from Pippa Passes. The Stepp Brothers have built that place and they might just keep him home at ALC.

I think time will tell how much Stepp improves over the next couple of years but I'd say he will end up playing at ALC..

I dont think that mountain players aren't able to play at D-1 schools, I just think that they dont get enough exposure. There have been and will still be players from this area who could play at the D-1 level but until somone drags their slves down here to see them they wont be playing D-1.

What schools are recruiting Gilbert?

I heard Center College was recruiting him.

I believe there is usually 3 to 5 kids in the mountains(12th,13th,14th,15th,16th) that could play for a school like Morehead or Eastern. The last time I checked those teams except for last year have been not been winning to many games, so why not recruit the kids from the area who are passionate about playing for those type of University's. Recruiting these type of kids would also put fans in the stands and help give the games a better atmosphere.

Does anyone know of any players from the 13th, 14th & 15th regions from last year that are playin D1 or NAIA basketball this season?????

Daniel Combs, Rodney Mitchell,Tyson Gross, and the kid from South Laurel, and Jermaine Martin.

Where do they play & do they get any playing time? I think some of these players play @ Alice Lloyd, right.
