March 31, 201313 yr It's driving me crazy, I love to target shoot at least twice a month, but who can go anymore when you can't find ammo. I refuse to pay the marked up prices on facebook and at the flea market as well. I'm of the opinion if people would stop paying the high prices those waiting in line at wal mart every morning would stop. It's insane to me that people are getting 10 to 12 bucks a box for steel cased Russian made .223's.
March 31, 201313 yr I'm just hoping that once it warms up say May or June that people will start golfing, boating and swimming and not be spending as much time worrying about ammo.
March 31, 201313 yr Try to find a box of 22's. Hardest ammo to find right now. Heard that they are going for up to 70 bucks a brick at trade shows. I shot a few hundred rounds yesterday. It's an expensive hobby.

Dunhams raised the price of some ammo from 16.99 to 19.99. They got a truck in Thursday and just let the ammo sit on the counter. It was a small box and I'm guessing not much left by the end of the day to put away.
March 31, 201313 yr There is somewhat of a shortage, but ammo is there. The problem is the people without jobs standing at Wally World from 5 a.m., buying everything WM has, then trying to flip it on GunBroker or trade and sell on Facebook.

This is probably accurate if people would refuse to buy from anyone but the stores you'd start seeing it on store shelves. But as long as people pay the inflated prices on the secondary market it they will continue to not have any on store shelves.
March 31, 201313 yr Had a similar run on ammo like this a few years ago, for about 9 months it was a scarce as could be. Then suddenly shelves started to fill up. Some Manufacturers have raised wholesale prices which have in turn raised retail prices. Best chance to find ammo is if you have a good relationship with a FFL dealer that will order for you or let you pre-pay for ammo before it comes in. But even then some orders are taking months to fill. I know of a LE order that took over 6 months for the police to receive a order that had been placed. I wonder if all of the ammo ordered by DHS has had any thing to do with the shortages as those orders may be filled first?

I had wondered that as well, then I read something on fox or cnn (those are only two new sources I use really), that said the contracts everyone are talking about aren't actually ordering 1.6 billion round, that is just the maximum the contract allows them to order. Went on to explain that DHS has actually ordered less this year than the last two years, of course who knows who to believe.
March 31, 201313 yr Good info...not sure why DHS can purchase hollow points when the military can't...but I guess they are considered LE and not military.
April 1, 201313 yr Good info...not sure why DHS can purchase hollow points when the military can't...but I guess they are considered LE and not military. Story I heard was DHS was buying 10 X's their normal amount. Who knows. I also don't think they are buying 22's so why the shortage for a recreational round?
April 1, 201313 yr It's not just ammo, trust me. I've worked in this industry for 33 years, I have never seen such a run on everything gun related as I've been witnessing the last few months. People are really concerned it won't be there in the near future.
April 1, 201313 yr Author Story I heard was DHS was buying 10 X's their normal amount. Who knows. I also don't think they are buying 22's so why the shortage for a recreational round? Some of that is seasonal, I talked to one of the gun store owners here and he was telling me most of the factories make 3 to 4 kinds of ammunition a year, they rotate which kind they make in 3 to 4 month cycles, so if a huge rush hits the factories may not be making that type of shell at the moment.
April 1, 201313 yr I am glad none of my rifles fire .223, shoot even 7.62x39 has gotten crazy compared to what it used to be. I am very happy that 7.62x54R is still relatively cheap.
