Andre Smith eyeing $9 million per year

Featured Replies

Smith, a first-round pick in 2009 who had the final two years of his rookie deal disappear when the Bengals opted not to pay him a $4.75 million option bonus in 2011, will be able to negotiate with other teams as of March 9, and to sign elsewhere on March 12.

Of course, the negotiations already have begun. Tampering, yes, but they’re happening. And word is that Smith is looking for a deal that pays out $9 million per year.

In hindsight, perhaps the Bengals should have paid the money and kept Smith. He has become in recent years a very good player. And if he gets what he’s looking for on the open market, Smith’s much-maligned rookie deal will look a lot better in hindsight.

At 9 million per year I don't see Smith in the Bengals future.

Classic Bengal policy to let him walk.

A pass-rushing DE for the Bengals just got tagged at $11M+ for a season. $9M for a strong run-blocking RT doesn't seem out of the question.

Is he really worth 9 mill a year? They should have drafted his replacement last year.

How do we measure "worth?"

One way we measure worth is by your post above. What did the Bengals run game do last year? It wasn't very good, not horrible, but certainly not good. If the run game isn't good, than are the pieces that make up the run game worth said amount of money, I think not.

That's a bit simplistic, my friend. Bengals had a lot of new pieces inside which I would say contributed to any running game problem as much as the two tackles.

Let him walk he is fat and out of shape. Run game was horrible and pass blocking wasn't much better. I still can't believe we drafted him I would have rather drafted the starting right tackle for the Vikings that year.

Phil Loadholt is the tackle the Bengals should sign he is 6'8 340 he was drafted the same year as Smith and is also a free agent this year.

9 a year? That's a lot of off season burgers, pass.

The Giants locked up their starting LT for around $7 million per year.

9 seems high but the Bengals do have a ton of extra cap room. He might not get that in free agency and come back to Cincy at a lower price.
