One of irrelevance. Does anyone really, truly care about this band after its first three amazing records? It registers with me about as much as anything Axl Rose does. Actually, that's not true. I think a lot more highly of STP than any of the garbage Axl put out.

Nope. I don't much care for the sound of wailing cats, and that's Axl. His sunny personality really puts him over the edge for me.

I think, excepting maybe Pearl Jam, pretty much all of the early 90s grunge rock bands have fallen into irrelevancy. Scott Weiland is washed up...plane and simple. Dude's been arrested for possession of pretty much every illicit drug and controlled substance, has a few DUIs, and it's edging up on 20 years since he had anything to do with putting out significant new music. Zero doubt in my mind that the band dumped him because of his continued problems with substance abuse.

 

Side Note: STP's cover of Led Zeppelin's Dancing Days is one of the greatest covers I've ever heard.

They got lucky to come along when they did, as the only "safe" band to get through the awful hair-metal phase. And while many folks conveniently forget, I still recall their first video, which looked like Axl was trying real hard to be Bret Michaels.

They got lucky to come along when they did, as the only "safe" band to get through the awful hair-metal phase. And while many folks conveniently forget, I still recall their first video, which looked like Axl was trying real hard to be Bret Michaels.

I find it interesting that when they first came out they were marketed as a hair-metal band, and got you guys to buy in on that level. To their credit, they abandoned it after it became obvious the end of the hair-metal fad was near.

No problem there, just letting you know that you missed the boat on a great record:sssh: Axl has definately missed the boat on what could have been a great career, although I guess living off of royalties from the sales of "Appetite" would be considered a pretty good career also. To be honest, I purchased it a good 3-4 months prior to the extensive radio/MTV play it recieved. I bought it because it had a cool album cover, not the original banned one, but the one we know now.They were far from hair metal, although they were definately marketed that way. On a side note, I have Sirius/XM Radio, there is a station called "Hair Nation". They play a ton of stuff on there that I would never consider hair metal, like Iron Maiden, The Cult, Triumph, Queensryche, Black Label Society, etc..

I didn't miss the boat. I've heard it way more times than I wanted, and am glad it's not shoved in my face anymore. Again, yowling cats. That's what this album reminds me of.

 

And none of those bands you mentioned at the end is hair metal. I'm ambivalent toward Queensryche and Triumph, but have always enjoyed Maiden, The Cult and BLS. You should remember this, anyway, that the schlock aspect of hair metal (Dokken, Winger, Bullet Boys, Cinderella, etc.) was what pushed me toward hip-hop and college rock. It's not like we didn't discuss it back then. For Chrissakes, you guys were coming at me with a new band every week, each of them less memorable than the previous one, in those days. If Skid Row is held up as a paragon of the genre, the red flags should be easy to spot. I spotted them and said, "No, I think I'll cast my lot with Run DMC and LL Cool J."
