A great question would be, does it cost more to hire the agents to investigate unemployment claims and welfare applications, find violations, and then enforce the agency's rules, or just pay the unemployment and welfare without increasing the number of agents? I don't know, I am just asking.

I'm all for this, this is part of the reason why these assistance programs exist.

It's why I said short term help and a program built with incentives to get off gov't aid. There is no built incentive to the programs now to get off them. I'm not crazy and don't think we don't need any help but I also think its crazy to act like the systems as currently structured are the most efficent we could do. The programs were built for situations like you listed above. The problem is we have millions of people who have turned this into a generation to generation dependence on other peoples money, instead of short term assitance to get back on their feet.

Since I haven't done the research so I don't have the answer. But like any other organzation cutting waste and fraud is always more efficent than allowing decades of fraud. Once you eliminate a large part of the problem up keep of enforcement will be a lot more easy. So it may take a large investment up front of enforcement. But I much rather my tax dollars go torwards efficency than fraud.

I don't think anyone is saying we should do away with these programs. But at the same time they should have time limits.

The short answer is yes. When basically half the country does not pay income taxes, why would they care how much the other half pays? The liberal politician policies basically are to keep giving folks free stuff guaranteeing you get their vote...and it is working. When Obama was re-elected with a terrible economy, high unemployment, gas prices that have basically doubled since he took office, the national debt skyrocketing out of contol, etc., it was just mind boggling...until you realize it is all about people not paying taxes wanting free stuff. Don't get me wrong, I am not a huge fan of the republican party either. I just like the dems less - they are spending the country into oblivion and could not care less about the consequences.

Second, the question that is never asked in these government assistance and support program discussions is what happens to the these people when the social umbilical cord is cut? So you think welfare, Pell Grants and Medicare is costly? Check out the costs of incarceration some time, because I assert that those with low education and low motivation would end up in the criminal system. And what happens in the criminal system? You get FREE HOUSING , FREE FOOD, FREE EDUCATION and FREE HEALTHCARE.

I just want to hear what the plan is from conservatives when the social support plug is pulled. Something rational and logical that shows some reasoning ability?? Bumper sticker slogans do not count as a plan. Moving people from one social support system (Welfare, Early Education/ Pell Grants etc) to another, more expensive support system (criminal) does not result in any benefit to society.

My fair share keeps getting more fair for someone else. It's never going to get better. Never. It's a cycle that is now too big to break. As long as there is a candidate who will further his political career by feuling the machine and the population of gov't "assisted" voters grow and fill their gov't houses with babies, the cycle will continue. Those voters inevitably will outweigh those who are opposed, and there will be a party/politician who will promise to feed it.

Arpaio's practices include serving inmates surplus food[26] and limiting meals to twice daily.[27] He has also banned inmates from possessing "sexually explicit material" including Playboy magazine after female officers complained that inmates openly masturbated while viewing them or harassed the officers by comparing their anatomy to that of the nude models in the publications. The ban was challenged on First Amendment grounds but upheld by the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.[28]

In February 2007, Arpaio instituted an in-house radio station he calls KJOE.[29] Arpaio's radio station broadcasts classical music, opera, Frank Sinatra hits, patriotic music and educational programming. It operates from the basement of the county jail for five days a week, four hours each day.

In an ongoing case, federal judge Neil V. Wake ruled in 2008 and 2010 that the Maricopa County jails violated the constitutional rights of inmates in medical and other care related issues.[30][31]

Tent City

Arpaio set up a "Tent City" as an extension of the Maricopa County Jail.[32] Arpaio has described Tent City as a concentration camp.[33] Tent City is located in a yard next to a more permanent structure containing toilets, showers, and an area for meals.[34] It has become notable particularly because of Phoenix's extreme temperatures.

On July 2, 2011, when the temperature in Phoenix hit 118 °F (48 °C), Arpaio measured the temperature inside Tent City at 145 °F (63 °C). Some inmates complained that fans near their beds were not working, and that their shoes were melting from the heat.[35] During the summer of 2003, when outside temperatures exceeded 110 °F (43 °C), Arpaio said to complaining inmates, "It's 120 degrees in Iraq and the soldiers are living in tents, have to wear full body armor, and they didn't commit any crimes, so shut your mouths."[36] In 1997, Amnesty International published a report on Arpaio's jails which found that Tent City is not an "adequate or humane alternative to housing inmates in suitable ... jail facilities."[37] Tent City is criticized by groups contending that there are violations of human and constitutional rights.[38] Those critical of Arpaio also point out that the vast majority of inmates within Tent City have not been convicted; rather, they are merely awaiting trial.[39]

Volunteer chain gangs

In 1995, Arpaio reinstituted chain gangs. In 1996, he expanded the chain gang concept by instituting female volunteer chain gangs.[40] Female inmates work seven hours a day (7 a.m. to 2 p.m.), six days a week. He has also instituted the world's first all-juvenile volunteer chain gang; volunteers earn high school credit toward a diploma.[41]
