Clevenger back to Danville

Featured Replies

Also, I am pretty sure that Coach Harp didn't run a run-and-shoot at Anderson or early at Danville. Thought he was pretty much a straight wishbone guy up until the late 90s.

He did. I have no idea who truthbtold is but his truth is kind of off on several points.

It appears to be off on just about every point.

I have knowledge of Duffy's schemes and Harps. I watched the run your referring to. It looked similar play wise.

With all do respect, there is nothing similar about the Split Back Veer, and the Wishbone (power style that Danville ran, not Wishbone Triple) along with the Tony Franklin System (Danville ran a lot of it with Adam Schott at QB in 00, 01 and 02; but, I think they were solely TFS in 2000), and one back/double tight stuff that they ran with they had Kelvin Turner and Charles Penix. When Penix and Turner were in the backfield in their Junior/Senior years, Danville was either in the Bone or when they needed to rest those guys (bc they both went one way), they got in single back sets and fed whichever was the monster that night. I remember the '03 Final vs. Beechwood very well. Danville lined up in the Wishbone (again it was a Power type scheme, not option) all day long and went for 500 total yards; all of it rushing. Penix and Turner both had around 250 each. Because from '98-'06, especially '98-'04 there wasn't any veer. I take that back, I think there was in '99, but that's it.

I can promise you that Adam Schott (QB from '00-'02 seasons) wasn't running any kind of veer option. That's not a knock on him either, b/c he was a gun slinger. Matter of fact, I think he was an '02 Mr. Football Finalist if memory serves me correct and finished at Danville's All Time Leading Passer.

Was Clevenger on the coaching staff at Henderson with Duffer?

According to the article from AM News he was not.

Correct. He was an assistant at Cumberland College/University of the Cumberlands (can't remember when they changed their name), then when that HC moved on, he came to Lincoln County as the O.C in 2006 (when Larry French was the HC).

From '98-'06 and those 6 finals and 4 State Championships had nothing to do with Duffy's schemes.

Now the Veer? Very well might have. That I didn't know.

Clevenger didn't spend anytime with Duffy at Henderson, though. Also, Clevenger played in the veer at Carson-Newman.

I would say maybe more of a Veer philosophy coming full circle, but not so much a Duffy one.

I couldn't find truthbtold's original post you were responding to but he couldn't have been more wrong. Sam Harp never ran a run and shoot at Anderson County. In fact part of the reason for his hire was the way his team at Anderson ran the ball and posted a season with only two losses (both to Danville). The reason they went 0-3 had everything to do with the schedule. If memory serves they started with 2 big schools and Lincoln County who would go undefeated before losing in the AAA State Semi-finals to Tighlman.

Again, there is no Duffy connection, no matter how hard some want to make one out of it.

Right you are. In '88 Danville's first three games/losses were against St. X, Henry Clay and Lincoln County. Then, Danville won 9-10 straight before they were beaten by Somerset in either the Region or Semi-Finals. Somerset then went onto play Ft. Knox in the finals, where they lost.

I agree. No connection. Again, the only "connection" (or resemblance, I should say) is the fact that both Duffy and Clay have now been Head Coaches at Henderson and Danville. Outside of that, no mas.

^^^ In my post about Penix and Turner, I mean that each played on BOTH sides of the ball. Not one way. Typo, but the time limit had already passed when I tried to go back and edit.

Actually, I beg to differ with a small point... Danville did run the triple option up until the late 90s (at least until 1996 - when Mike Floro was QB). QB crow-hopped and everything. They also ran an off-tackl belly-read look, as well as standard toss sweeps, buck sweeps and power off-tackle plays - but they were still option-heavy, then. I remember their scrimmages with Garrard when Perry coached there - they ran virtually the same offenses and defenses. Those were brutal scrimmages.

But you are right that even the veer run from split-back and from the wishbone are very different. At any rate, I don't think Coach Harp got any of that from Duffy.

The one time there was a big deviation was in '86. Duffy went to a one back set that was little more than a broken wishbone in most cases. He did that to put the ball in the hands of Keith Morgan and Jimmy Baughman more.

WOW..I wonder how Perry feels about that?

It appears he is looking to relocate after 16 years.

I saw that as well.

WOW, by looks of resume on listserv, he may just land on his feet. Impressive from where I am sitting
