Has anyone been there?

During some of my trips to Europe this year I am planning to go to Rome and the Holy Land, Now am am thinking of adding Medjugorje in there as well, as a cousin of mine and her friend (who hase been there already) have talked about us going there.

I am just wondering who has ever been there, and what you experienced?

I have not been there myself, but I know many people that have been there. Life-changing event for most of them, regardless of what you believe goes on there.

Medjugorje is one of those bits of life within the Church that has always fascinated me. Personally, I am not a believer in the Medjugorje apparitions. They raise too many questions.

But a trip to Rome and the Holy Land sounds amazing.

Not sure which trip this year it will be, but I do plan on getting there.

The Pope is said to give it shrine status this year, as well as Medjugorje being directly under the Vatican, which means it will become a place outside the jurisdiction of the local bishop. Also I read where the Vatican won't officially recognize or deny any events there as the apparitions are still happening, as that has never happened in the history of the Church.

Interesting...I did not realize all these updates in the status of Medjugorje. Good news. Go with an open mind. I'm sure something good will come out of it for you if you do.

I've just started to read some stuff on this, but before getting on this thread I had never heard of Medjugorje. Care to elaborate on your skepticism?

Despite my initial reluctance... sure.

Let me start by saying that my intention is not to cast aspersions at believers of this apparition. Let me also say that the Church does not and has never made belief in any Marian apparition a matter of dogma or otherwise bound believers to accept them: not Fatima, not Guadeloupe, not even Lourdes. None of them. Such apparitions are deemed either to be "worthy of belief."

My difficulty with the Medjugorje apparitions are two-fold in that they give rise to 1) accusations of heterodox teachings on the part of the Virgin Mary and 2) a sewing of disobedience and division within the Church unlikely to actually come from the Immaculata.

With regard to the first: at least one of the visionaries has suggested that Mary has told her several things that could at least be considered heterodoxy and could go as far as outright heresy.

- All sufferings are equal in hell

- After a time, people begin feeling comfortable in hell

- Those who go to heaven after death are present with the soul and the body

None of those is particularly grievous, although there are probably more I can't think of, but given the Church's historical stance on these issues -- not to mention Mary's own statements about hell in other apparitions -- these statements are problematic.

Then there is the issue of division and disobedience. Numerous times the visionaries have said that Mary has instructed them and others to openly defy their local bishop on issues that had nothing to do with the apparitions themselves. Such advocation of disobedience would be startling coming from the woman who is the absolute height of obedience and grace. Her statement, "Let it be done according to thy Word" was the beginning of the redemption of mankind that culminated in the Resurrection; a redemption made necessary not by greed, murder or lust, but by an act of disobedience in the garden.

These visions are also strikingly dissimilar from other apparitions. Most apparitions have occurred only once or twice or over a very short period of time. Since 1981, the Medjugorje visionaries have received over 40,000 messages and continue to receive them today. There have been numerous predictions about future events which have never come to pass.

In the end, I judge the visions in a way similar to the bishop of the area who has declined to endorse them: there is too little evidence of the supernatural and too much evidence of the non-supernatural.

That said, my initial hesitation about responding to this is because of the fruits of Medjugorje: conversions. There have been numerous conversions by people after visiting the site and that can only be considered a good thing.

Well, I guess I was looking for the completely wrong person at the last Highlands game I went to.
