All A State Championship or 9th Region Title

Featured Replies

Maybe someone smarter than me who has access to some info could answer a question: I'm curious as to how many teams have won their All A region and then gone on to win their region at end of the year and got to play at Rupp. It seems to me that playing in a big tourney mid season with good crowds can do nothing but help you get ready for the tourney at the end of the year and prepare you for the pressure.

Also, how long has the All A been in existence and did they start it in baseball the same year?

I'm not sure, but I think there has actually been 1 team that won the all A tourney and went on to win a state championship....not sure of who it was but thought I heard there has been 1 state championship from the All A tourney winner.

The All A has existed since 1980, although for the first 10 years it was basically a northern Kentucky invitiational, where they also invited a few small schools from around the state. Starting in 1990 it became a state-wide event with regions and then a state tournament. It was open to the 125 smallest schools based on enrollment from 10-12 grades. The girls tournament held regionals and then sectionals initially, with only 4 girls teams making it to the final tournament. They then went to 8 girls teams making the final tournament. Finally, the girls tournament became a 16-team event in either 1992 or 1993.

As for baseball, it became a state wide event in 2004.

Below is a link that can tell you almost everything I just did:

That was Shelby Valley a couple years ago.

At NCC there are always 3 goals at the start of the year.

1. Winning the 9th Region All A Regional

2. Winning an All A state championship

3. Refocusing and winning the 9th Region title and heading to Rupp.

That is exactly what the players were discussing on their way home from Frankfort on the bus. 9th region runner ups the last 2 years hasnt sat well with this senior class. They want it bad.

Here's where you will get plenty of debate.

Not taking sides either way; just saying.

So making it to Rupp is a goal but not winning it?

For many schools, yes. Obviously they want to win it, but perhaps that isn't likely. For many schools in Kentucky, winning the regional championship is almost akin to winning the state championship.

I think this relates to the topic in hand. Since NCC does not have their sites set on a State championship, Would NCC consider the year to be more successful if they won the All a state or the Regional?

Thanks

If you're talking just the 9th Region alone, in 2000 NewCath w/ Ronnie Dawn won the All 'A' State, and then lost in the 1st round at Rupp after having won the 9th Region Tournament. In 2010 Newport won both the 9th Region All 'A' and the 9th Region Tournament losing in the first rounds in both statewide tournaments. My memory is a big foggy from say 1990-1996, so I can't say for certain if any 9th Region teams other than the two that I mentioned accomplished this feat.

If you're talking about every region, then that would take a bit of research. As has already been mentioned, Shelby Valley won both the State 'A' and the Sweet 16 in 2010.

I am curious as to whether any team other than Shelby Valley ever won both, and were there any 9th Region teams between '90-'96 that won both the 9th Region All 'A' and the 9th Region Tourney?

I forgot to mention that in 2003 St. Henry won the All 'A' State in a final against Rose Hill w/ O.J. Mayo and then lost in the 1st Round of the Sweet 16 by 2 against eventual state champs Mason County w/ Chris Lofton.

In 1992, University Heights won the Sweet 16 but was upended by LexCath in the All A SFs.

In 1996, Paintsville won the Sweet 16 but lost in the All A first round to Harlan.

In the 1st region only 1 team has won both in the same year and that was in 2004 and it was Carlisle County.

That is crazy when you think about it. Thanks Jim, I didn't remember either situation.
