Newport Central Catholic 63 Bishop Brossart 37 All"A" Semi-Finals

Matchups

Basketball is all about matchups. Brossart has won plenty of big games and run with the big dogs every year that Coach Feldmann has been here. This year took Anderson County to the wire, and defeated DuPont Manual. The man is a student of the game, understands all of the intricacies of it, devises good game plans, and puts his teams in a position to win.

The Lady Stangs simply do not match up well with NCC. Giving up 24 points in the first half Saturday was certainly no disgrace, but only scoring 14 of our own put him in a position of having to do something else to turn the tide - it didn't happen. Kiernan and Mayes joined the fray and the blowout was on. Our girls got a bit anxious and panicky, went one on the world and the final score was the result.

If you doubt Coach Feldmann's knowledge and insights into the game, simply listen to the broadcast replay of a JV game where he does the color commentary. The man knows the game. To fail to appreciate what we have here and to shed doubts on his abilities is irresponsible. We are lucky to have him.

The Junior class at Brossart ( ST. Marys ) won the 7th grade Diocesan championship. Junior Class 8th grade year ST. Joe won the Diocesan championship. Freshman class ( ST. Mary )won the Diocesan championship 7th & 8th grade . They are all at Brossart except 1 @ NCC and 1 @ ND

Please correct me if I am wrong and help me if I forgot someone, but of this junior class from St. Joe, Futscher, Dierig, and Roberts went to BBHS. Kiernan, Schack and Maier to NCC and Hengge to Villa. Not sure how many they carried at St. Joe, but I am sure I am missing one or two since I only list seven. Maier no longer plays for NCC due to volleyball, but where is Dierig and Roberts for Brossart. IMO they are both very good athletes and could really help this team. In fact Roberts may be the best all around athlete in that class, again IMO. They both played last year as sophomores and played some quality varsity minutes. Is there a reason why they are not playing this year. Are they consentrating on another sport, studies, etc?

Does this team really need a lot f help? They are having an excellent season. Only one team in the whole state wins the all a tourney.

I think "pride" is keeping everyone from overlooking the fact that the Frankfort game took a toll, both mentally and physically. I keep hearing about the vastness of talent but the stats show that BB beat a Frankfort team that shot 22% by one point.

Was not trying to indicate Brossart needs a lot of help, because they are a very good team. Just simply asking the question why these two girls were not playing as part of the response to the St. Joe and St. Mary winning the Diocesan Championship. I do not know the answer, however, I do feel that they are both good atheletes and good basketball players, and my thought was that they could help the team. That's all.

Sound point

When this class was Freshmen they won Regionals first Frosh girls team at Brossart to do so. Now some of this class was moved up to JV and didn't play on Frosh team. So this class had some players on it and not all were from St. Joes and St Marys.

But why Coaches (not just Brossart) pick and choose who they think are it and not make all players fill apart of team is beyond me "not saying right or wrong" just saying I don't understand. We've all seen it somewhere when we've said "why isn't that kid playing???"

But there is no doubt that their bench could be stronger. Still good but??

I agree with you totally BBsports. When you have players that have some good potential as a coaching staff you have to work even harder with them to get everything you can out of them and not push those kids aside cause coaches have already picked there favorites and alot of times those kids never get a chance and you might never know what they couldve been??? Thats why you see so many kids quit when they see whats going on.

Here is one thing that everyone needs to keep in mind. Coaches spend 2 hours a day with their players to evaluate talent every single day. Coaches bust their tail off to motivate and improve the players at the end of the bench who may or may not deserve playing time. During those two hours, the players have their opportunities to show improvements and show the coach they deserve to be on the court. Every player is playing during practice. Some potentially good players may not be able to prove it or may not take the next step at practice. Bottom line is, coaches see players on a daily basis for around 2 hours a day where fans see the players play for a few minutes at a time during games. Now, I understand all that what really matters is how the players play on gameday, but time on the floor is earned during practices.

I agree with that. And when you factor in the other things, Leadership, ability to understand strategies and plays, attitude, effort, focus, team or individual mindset, does the player make the players around them better? There are tons of things that go into playing time other than just does a kid have skills.

I have no idea what's going on, but the previous statement and these things are often overlooked by fans.

does the player make the players around them better?

I hear this little phrase used a lot. Not quite sure how it is measured.

Good question. I look at it as I describe below. Others that use the phrase may have a different opinion.

Will the other players reach down and go to battle for that player. Does that player make others want to play harder because of the attribute they show and exemplify. Is that player a good teammate and sacrifices for the better of the team. Do they do all the little things to get others shots/stats, without placing or caring about focus on them (blue collar worker, if you will). Does that player love the challenge of guarding the other teams best player, so maybe others don't have to? Is that player the player a team goes to when they may need to increase physical play. Are they the energy player that keeps the team up when they are tired or unmotivated for a particular game. Can that player draw attention/focus to themselves on the court, that allows others to not worry about certain things. Can that player provide feedback to their peers positively? (Not yelling at someone for mistakes, but helping them understand why certain things are important, a coach on the court if you will). Making the players around you better probably crosses over many categories, but these are some traits I would throw into "a player that makes others around them better"

I can think of a lot of kids that play this role, but one that really stands out and most people know is Leah Schaffer. Leah is not always a stat stuffer and I don't think she gets enough credit for the things she does. She is ALL those things above and more. She may not WOW you with her scoring or other numbers that people focus on, but when you watch her for multiple games, you quickly realize she does all those things that make players around her better. She is the perfect fit for this example and I'm sure why she is so attractive to Xaiver. Obviously I see HHS a lot and I think this is where a lot of their success has come from this year. They have several players that play for the good of the team and not their stats and it pays off for them. Ava Abner, Alex Combs and Haley Coffey all do a lot of those things for the current HHS team. That doesn't take ANYTHING away from the other bluebirds, just saying that these girls and Leah fill this particular role for the birds. The other kids fill their roles well too and still do a lot of the things I mentioned above.

Every knowledgable fan and coach can come up with a list from the team they support. You have to have these types of kids to have any kind of success. All good teams have them.

Based on your criteria, I do not think any fan could accurately assess it. I think that coaches that see different combinations in practice and different interactions between players are the only ones who could make this determination.

Oh I agree. That was my main point in defending a coach. I just meant that a knowledgeable fan can come up with a list of girls that they could put in some of these categories or fits the "blue collar worker" mold.

To label someone all of that stuff, you're right! Pretty much the coaching staff only!

and to add...to label someone that makes the players around them better, you wouldn't have to do all these things. I'm sure you could be labeled that way with a combination or with the combination that a particular coach is looking for based on his values and strategies. What he needs out of certain kids could change year over year based on personnel.
