Did they call a foul on the winning shot?

 

The ref underneath immediately called the foul and said basket good - trailing ref also did same. Clock said 00:00. Refs then met at table. What they were discussing (which we found out after game) was trying to determine if any time should be reamining on clock to convert the FT. After about a minute - one ref waived his arms like he was waiving the basket off. Frankfort began to go crazy thinking they had won. But what he was actually doing was waiving no more time remaining and game over. Then Brossart started the celebration. WILD ENDING

First of all I sound like a blithering idiot, and didn't know the correct final score which was as posted here 41-39.

 

See here hours later I still didn't get the score right - 41-40 Brossart Wins - I think.

 

Maybe this also effects my horseplaying. I pick the right horse, but call the wrong number.

I dont think your used to getting up this early like you did today and its just thrown your whole day off! But I'll still be listening to your broadcast tonight so just make sure you got the correct score tonight. :thumb:

I'm sure of only 2 things after watching this game. First, no one really knows if the shot was off in time, it was so close only replay with a backboard light could tell. It is a shame that this is not mandatory, officials should not have to make that call, too much going on too much riding on it. Secondly, you can call it an ugly game but it was refreshing to see girls displaying their athleticism and not sitting back in zones. Congrats to BB. I too second the comment on Shauntae Brown, if their is a point guard better, she's not in KY. UL needs to come to the Capital and take a look.

After the Frankfort three to put them up one - BB inbounded the ball with 9 sec left. But there was a approx. a 3 second hesitation as I believe she was waiting for the timeout to be called. But BB was out of timeouts. The pass came into Futscher in the back court who in turn I believe hit Hartig. Hartig then fed Greis at midcourt in front of scorer table. Stadtmiller was directly across from Gries on opposite side. As soon as Gries got the pass Stadtmiller was in full motion. ( i thought for sure Greis was going to give a midcourt heave for shot) but she saw Abby breaking free and hit her in perfect stride around 3 point line at top of key. Nobody from Frankfort was back but there were two defenders breathing down on her hard. Two Dribbles and she laid it in LEFT HANDED and was hammered. She did beat the horn. What was so amazing about that play was that Stadtmiller was racing against the clock, had two defenders bearing down on her hard, She knew the contact was coming, and she was able to convert the left handed lay up ( she is right handed). Amazing finish

My question is if the foul was before the horn (which it was because I was right there and heard it) but the release of the ball was after the horn what is the call?? No basket but 2 Free throws? Or does the basket count because she was in the act of shooting when fouled before the horn? I think the shoot was good because I think it was out of her hand before I heard the horn but if it was not what would the call have been?

I spoke with Charlie Chappie who officiated this game. He said no if and or butts it was the correct call. They went to the scorers table to see if there was .3 seconds or more remaining. If so, the foul shot has to be taken, if not game is over. There was .1 seconds so the foul shot need not be taken and game over. He did indicate that the ref waving his hands, meaning game over, probably did confuse some folks. For those in attendance you may have noticed the scoreboard had lights on them the next day.

This caused a ton of confusion. Frankfort thought they won the game due to the ref "waving off the shoot" which we know was really signaling game over. The histaria only stopped when the PA announcer gave out the final Score. Ref should have signaled basket good sign first then game over or have PA announcer explain as the ref's were running for the door. It was the right call just not handled well. the ref's did a great job in this game that was very very physical and at times out of control due to the style of play by Frankfort which has a great team.

Hard game to watch but a great finish.

I respect Chappie very much and have known him for a long time but there is no way in the world that the call should have been made without the aid of a video and light. If they can guarantee that the right call was made then they must be vastly better than college and professional referees that ALWAYS look at the video and light. In the college game there NEVER would have been a decision made without the combination. It was just too close to call.

I asked a few of my friend about this and one of them had a good point. If the whistle was blown for the foul before time ran out (which it did because i heard it) the horn should have never blown because the clock should have stopped. The right call should have been basket good, 1 foul shot, and .3 second or so on the clock. but if that is not enough time to get a ball in play then they called the game since BBHS had the lead and the foul shoot was not needed to decide the game.

Thoughts???

and Yes Charlie Chappie is very good and I have a ton of respect for him. I am not questioning his integrity just wondering how this could have been handled better.

The right team won because the basket was good IMO

Hey Norm, it's a highschool game, there is no video and the boards, for that game, did not have lights. They did the correct thing to go to the scorers table to confirm if any fractions of a second were on the clock. The scoreboard did not show tenths, but the machine at the table does. They indicated on the court the basket was good and called the foul on the shot, as I said before (which you must have grazed over) they only went to the table to see if the foul shot needed to be taken. Not enough time was left game over.
