I asked a few of my friend about this and one of them had a good point. If the whistle was blown for the foul before time ran out (which it did because i heard it) the horn should have never blown because the clock should have stopped. The right call should have been basket good, 1 foul shot, and .3 second or so on the clock. but if that is not enough time to get a ball in play then they called the game since BBHS had the lead and the foul shoot was not needed to decide the game.

and Yes Charlie Chappie is very good and I have a ton of respect for him. I am not questioning his integrity just wondering how this could have been handled better.

The right team won because the basket was good IMO

 

The thinking that there should have been time left is incorrect. The rulebook realizes that there is a lag between the time the whistle blows and the clock stopping. The other part of the rule says that you cannot change the clock UNLESS you have "definite knowledge" of how much time was on the clock.

 

IF they determined that there was time left , regardless of being more or less than 0.3, you line them up and shoot the FT.

 

So these officials could not have heard the whistle blow and then look up to see the clock with how close the whistle was to 0:00.

 

Based on what has been described I can't see any way it could have been handled better other than the R signaling "basket is good."

Not signaling basket good was the biggest problem IMO. This created about 2 minutes of madness and they left it up to the PA person to let everyone know the outcome. IMO the outcome should be clear before they leave the floor. Right call not handles in the best manor. The only reason I am still talking about it is I don't think many people have seen this happen and I am curious. I know I have never seen anything like this in 30 years of watching HS basketball.

Watch the video again. The ref at the bottom of the screen at the very end walks over to the desk and clearly indicates the basket is good.

If you watch at the top the trail offical also calls a foul and basket good but what is not on the video is that they get together for about a 30 second to discussion then go to the scorers table for about a 1 minute to discussion then step back and 1 ref waves his hands in the air as if he was waving off the basket and they run off the floor. The Frankfort fans go nuts because they think he just waved off the basket and they won. BBHS's coach then goes to the scorers table and ask three times is the basket good and the reply was yes but he was the only one that knew. The PA person then came on and said Brossart 41 Frankfort 40 then the brossart fans went crazy. Now do you see why there was confusion. They should have stepped back signaled basket good and waved to show that the game was over. As I have stated the call was correct just could have been handled a little better.

Wow!!! First I had seen this, very exciting to say the least.

 

Look how excited the Brossart coach and players get as they run on the floor and then the reaction of the other coaches waving them back to the bench.
