Is UL Coach Hurtt In Trouble?

Featured Replies

Hurtt is toast. It will have no direct effect on UofL as the NCAA told the university to take no action while the investigation was ongoing. And Bridgewater doesn't appear to be a target, which doesn't surprise me-- the kid is seriously introverted and monastic for a football star.

That is not true. They told them not get involved in questioning or become involved in an investigation that wasn't at their school, but the NCAA did not tell them to employ him.

They had already hired him when the allegations were made. They can't fire him without an investigation or a finding by the NCAA, because then it's without cause.

Looks like UL might be in a "World of Hurtt".

Looks like UL might be in a world of Hurtt.

I highly doubt they lose anything other than Hurtt on the staff. However, when the NCAA digs, they are out to get people. It is no secret the there are a lot of Florida boys on the UL team, who knows what will turn up.

The local media had a pre-existing appointment to effusively praise Mayor Fischer for something pointless. I'm sure they've got an appointment for UofL tomorrow.

Well done.

I think if you're a UL fan you have to be a little bit nervous. I'm not saying they didn't anything wrong or that anything will come from this other than Hurtt being shown the door. But with the nature of recruiting these days + Hurtt's / Miami's troubles + Teddy bailing on Miami for UL + all the other Florida players on UL's roster you have to at least consider the possibility that the NCAA will find something.

UL will not be or should they be punished for anything. I will bet anyone one on this site Charlie Strong and Tom Jurich are not having any part of it.

As for Coach Hurtt as long as he told Tom Jurich the truth TJ will do all he can for him. If Coach Hurtt has mislead TJ during any part of this he will be fired.

Not sure what the NCAA will do to Coach Hurtt but it doesn't look good for this young man.

This will not effect the recruiting as much as people think. Yes Hurtt has been important to the recruitment of Miami but not the entire state.

Thank goodness Bridgewater is not eligible for the draft this year. He would be gone.

That would have nothing to do with any investigation. He's a first rounder right now if he were eligible.

True, he would be a top 10 pick this year if he were eligible so I guess that is a moot point.

 I can't help but laugh at this thread and think about how decidedly different the viewpoints would be if this were a UK assistant basketball coach.

My opinion isn't different. I think Hurtt was dirty at Miami and deserves the show cause that he's going to receive. I think they had a culture of non-compliance across their major revenue sports. I don't think the situation is true at Louisville, and Strong deserves the benefit of the doubt seeing as I've never heard a word about him having any problems. If Strong had a compliance problematic past, then I think it would invite further scrutiny.

Media in Kentucky is awfully quiet about this, but the storm clouds that have been brewing for a couple of years may finally produce some rain.

Pulled this from another board, but here are some snippets regarding Hurtt.

--Nevin Shapiro - the former Miami booster who is the main source for this scandal - told federal agents in taped interviews that on two occasions he paid for Hurtt to bring large groups of Hurricanes football recruits to dinner at Miami Beach restaurant Cafe Grazie.

--Shapiro claims to have provided Hurtt an interest-free loan of $5,000 ? one $2,500 cash payment and one $2,500 check. Shapiro said during his interviews with federal agents that Hurtt did repay the loans. However, Shapiro said he knew it was an NCAA violation to provide interest-free loans to coaches.

--On a Friday night in 2008, Shapiro said Hurtt arranged to bring three Miami recruits ? Andre Debose, Ray-Ray Armstrong and Dyron Dye ? to Shapiro's $6 million Miami Beach mansion for the purposes of the booster recruiting the players.

--Hurtt acted as a liaison between Shapiro and Miami recruits on one other occasion, bringing the players to Shapiro's mansion and then taking them to a dinner paid for by the booster.

--The following check (signed by Hurtt) obtained by Yahoo would seem to corroborate Shapiro's story about the $2,500 interest-free loan.

--Yahoo also obtained phone records which show that Hurtt was in contact with Shapiro while working as a Louisville assistant. The pair texted often right up until the time Shapiro was jailed. Hurtt's last cell phone communication with Shapiro appears to be Feb. 13, 2010.

--Though there are no allegations made against him, Cardinal quarterback Teddy Bridgewater is named as being in Shapiro's suite at Dolphin's Stadium along with current Central Florida QB Jeffrey Godfrey, who is accused of accepting improper benefits from Shapiro.

--Not exactly a shocker that one of the former players named by Shapiro is oft-troubled former (sort of) U of L linebacker Willie Williams.

How can this not effect both coach Strong and UL at some point both were on the miami staff when they recruited Teddy and he is now at UL with both.

Strong was on the Florida staff, not Miami. And if there were no infractions involving Teddy, what would you recommend the punishment be???

Charlie Strong was at Florida, not Miami. To my knowledge, they didn't coach together until Hurtt came to Louisville.
