2013 10th Region Class "A" Tournament Preview

 

Nicholas County & its first-class facility will play host to this year's 10th Region Boys Class "A" Tournament, taking place January 14th-19th. Three-time defending champion Bishop Brossart is the clear favorite to bring home the title, but Jason Hinson's Augusta squad has had its sight set on a trip to Frankfort as well. Nicholas County has the luxury of playing at home, but received the kiss of death having to likely square off with the tourney favorite in its first (and only?) game. The Bracken County Polar Bears are a scrappy, defensive bunch, but are undersized & struggle to score. Geoff Cody's Paris team is undoubtedly the youngest in the field (and even the entire 10th Region). There is talent galore, but it is inexperienced with four freshmen in the starting lineup. St. Patrick has been crippled (no pun intended) by season-ending injuries to its top two returners from last year. Calvary Christian, Silver Grove, & Deming are a combined 4-36.

 

On paper it certainly seems to be a two-horse race. But of course, these games are not played on paper. And especially in tournament play we all know that anything can happen. So here is a a rundown of the annual small-school get-together.

put up some incredible numbers when the spotlight shines its brightest, you can never be sure.

Additionally, Bach doesn't carry the Panthers by himself.

ite among opposing coaches because of his

grittiness & ability to do numerous things on the court. Freshman forward

Camryn Snapp

is

going to be outstanding & has the ability to give the Mustangs some problems with his versatility.

If Bracken County makes the dozen or so bunnies they had early in that game and free throws they win. They have to play near flawless but it is a winnable game for them. Their zone defense has really tightened up since that game, should be a good one.

And the 10th Region winner will face the champions of the 7th Region on Thursday, January 24 at 1:00 p.m. The seventh region should be represented by either Louisville Collegiate (who fell to Covington Holy Cross in the semifinals last year) or Kentucky Country Day. The region also includes Whitefield Academy, St. Francis, and Brown.

Since Brossart first won the All "A" region in 2001, they have owned the region, winning 10 titles to go along with an All "A" State Championship in 2007. The only two years the Mustangs failed to win the region were 2002, when Paris was champions, and 2009, when Calvary Christian won the trip to Richmond. Of the nine teams in the region, only Augusta, Deming, and Silver Grove have never won an All "A" Region title. Paris has won four (last in 2002), St. Patrick has won three (last in 2000), Bracken County has won twice (last in 1998), and Nicholas County has won once (in 1994).

With all due respect to all the teams, I think BBHS is the heavy favorite and should bring home another regional All A title. But that is why they play the games. Good luck to all the teams.
