Then you'd be missing almost everything by Pac and everything by Big. Dr. Dre's Chronic album didn't come out until late 92', and IMO that album started a 4-5 year trend in rap music. I think 88-97 is a good timeframe considering you still have all the groudnbreaking stuff as well as the stuff from Dre, Snoop, Pac, Big, Short Dog (too short), Scarface, etc.

I read in RS that despite getting credit for "The Message" Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five do not sing on the song. They do the voices at the very end when the police are showing up.

This thread made me dig into the archives. Sure enough, pulled out an old favorite cassette of mine, Grand Masters of Rap, and there they were, #1 and #2 on the list. Also on the cassette is the club favorite White Lines. I am gonna have to plug it in and listen.

My boys listen to Drake a lot. I can't stand that sound and it bores me to tears.

I don't know about standing the test of time but a few years ago Wiz Khalifa was putting out some fresh new stuff that I really liked. Went a little more commercial than I like on his big label album "Rolling Papers", but most of the stuff he done before that (Prince of the City II, Kush and OJ mixtapes to name a few) and the mixtapes he has done afterwards have still been good. Him and Snoop made an album that was basically a soundtrack to a movie they done, it was titled "Mac and Devin Go to High School", it was pretty good. Then one of his latest mixtapes, "Taylor Allderidice" was pretty good as well. So although I almost lost faith in him after the stinker that was the "Rolling Papers" album, to me he is at the top of the list as far as stuff that has came out in the last 5-6 years.

 

 

A couple more artists that I have liked recently are a group called DBC or Dough Boyz Cashout. Not the lyrical content of all the great musical genius' of the past, but when it comes to spittin fire these guys can spit some rhymes.

 

 

Also there is a couple of new white rappers to emerge during this timeframe, one in particular I really like is a dude by the name of Yelawolf. He has a lot of good stuff, a lot of stuff that is a little different. The other two big ones are Machine Gun Kelly (MGK) and Mac Miller. I'm not a huge fan of either although a lot of people love them both. Mac Miller I thought was going to be the man when he first came out, his first few mixtapes were off the hook, since then he's pretty much sold out (much like most rappers) and I've gave up on him.

 

 

J. Cole is another who is kind of new, kind of fresh. Has a lot more lyrical content than some of these other guys. I mean he's not Pac or Big or anything, but he's signed by Jay-Z and Jigga usually has a keen eye for talent. You may like some of his stuff as it has a lot more content to it than most stuff nowadays.

 

 

Gucci Mane is another that has been around for a while that I like. Pretty much the most basic rapper of all time but for some reason I've always liked him pretty good, he's got some good stuff out there. As far as content or ability, again pretty limited. But there's something about him I like.

 

 

 

 

 

As far as standing the test of time, not sure how any of these guys play into that, but hopefully this helps you out a bit.

Correct. Both were also signed to Rostrum Records which is a Pittsburgh independent label. Like I said, Mac Miller spit some flame tracks on his first few mixtapes I thought he was the next coming, then he pretty much turned into an MTV pop star. I don't get it, it happens to everybody nowadays, I guess money really does talk.

Pop music is always going to be the biggest, flashiest thing they can come up with at any given moment. Right now, it's 40 songs all over the same three dance beats.

 

As for good, innovative stuff over the last 10 years... sure, but good and innovative have never meant that they'd be big-time stars that people would remember for ever.

 

Jay-Z will certainly hold up through the years. Kanye will too.
