My Top 15 List of the Worst Christmas Decorations

Featured Replies

After touring around the greater NKY area this Christmas season, I've had the opportunity to see and enjoy some beautifully (or at least, skillfully) decorated homes. But, are you like me? Are there certain decorations or decoration concepts that just drive you nuts? Driving around, lately, I've been compiling a Top 15 list of bad decoration ideas. So here is my Silver Christmas Tree Awards for the tackiest decoration ideas:

15. Lighted Snowflakes - I can't explain this one; I just think they look dorky.

14. Inflatable Santas with Cut-out Sleighs - If you're going to go to all the trouble of cutting out a 2D wooden sleigh and reindeer, don't mess it up by putting your Kmart Santa next to it.

13. Giant Glow-Balls - These are some sort of color-changing...balls...which people hang in their trees and other dumb places.

12. Old-fashioned (large) Light Bulbs - You know, the kind that used to melt your tinsel. Go on, stop at Kmart and get you some 21st century lights so people don't think you're living in Ralphie's house from Christmas Story.

11. Large Lights Mixed with Little Lights - This is exponentially worse than #8. This is like wearing a Hawaiian shirt with a tie.

10. Super-Sized Old-Fashioned Lights - These are like the old-fashioned lights...but like three times bigger. I actually saw someone's yard outlined with these things.

9. Aluminum Trees - Yes, they are endangered, but they're still out there.

8. Blinking Trees - Trees that blink off and on: Who can stand that? It's like Christmas at Gitmo.

7. Blinking Light Strings - I saw this one tonight. These people had used multiple light strings, and each string blinked on and off, separately. We're not talking twinkling here -- just flashing strings.

6. Angels that Blink - If you're going to top your tree with a lovely angel, don't make her look like she's trying to sell you something.

5. Multiple Deflatables - I saw a yard, today that had four or five inflatable figures, and they were all flat as a pancake. It looked like a drive-by puncturing massacre. One is okay, but not a bunch of them (Made this rule to avoid being labeled a hypocrite when our snowman is down.)

4. Drunken Magi - If you're going to put a nativity scene, a Santa or any other figure in your yard, don't put them up cockeyed so they look like they're either drunk or in an earthquake.

3. Track(y) Lighting - You know, that tube lighting that looks like fiber optic cable that people like to use for gutter trim, or to outline their sidewalks. It looks like you're waiting for the mother-ship to land and take you back to Krypton. (Hint: They ain't comin' back!)

2. No Decorations at All - Unless your name is Ebenezer or you're physically incapable, you have no excuse for being a Grinch. Put up a wreath or something.

And the overall #1 winner of the 2012 Silver Christmas Tree Awards is...

1. Net lighting - Do I really need to say more?

This list is all in fun and no offense meant toward anyone who is currently (or in the past) decorating with anything on the above list -- which probably includes you, everyone on BGP, my family, friends, neighbors and everyone else on the planet.

If you need to contact me, I'll be, um, "out of town" until after the holidays.

Grinch!
I try! :D

I spent the day at the mall. I officially hate the holidays.

How can you not like #12? That's just un-Christmas like conduct!

We used to have them on our tree when I was little, and I wouldn't mind having that again. But mixing them with little lights on your house is tack-o-rific!

I like my net lighting :D

Dr. Phil would say,

"I think you have "light envy". You had no lights at all as a child. Now you are are just plain insecure about your lighting ability. And Angry! So instead of attempting to join in with a festive lighting display, you ridicule others. You need counseling."

Or maybe just a big old BGP Christmas group hug!

Actually, we have a pretty awesome display. Not Christmas Vacation awesome....but pretty good, just the same.

Grinch!

I agree with #7 and 8, and one house in your area drives me nuts! Every time I pass it I expect to see someone at the door turning the light switch on and off.

Christmas Vacation awesome....
I am just happy you think Christmas Vacation is awesome. Unlike another Christmas movie.

Not if they're on your house and the mini lights are on trees and/or bushes. I think they look nice.

Wow, blue christmas lights don't make your top 15? Not a Highlands jab:cool:, just can't stand a house decorated with all blue lights.

I think all Christmas decorations are fantastic. I don't care what they look like. They represent joy and happiness. Doesn't matter if it is the most elegant decorations you've ever seen or the biggest hodge podge of unmatching stuff.

My favorite house is right up the road from me. It's an older couple I know, with 3 grown kids and 6 grand kids. They go out after Christmas every year and buy a bunch of sale decorations to add to the collection. There is hardly a square foot of yard or house that doesn't have some thing on it.

Their kids and grand kids come every Thanksgiving. They spend the weekend together as a family decorating and having fun. That to me is what it's all about.

My middle son once said, "It looks like someone vomitted Christmas on their yard. I love it." It doesn't get any better.
