Newport Central Catholic State Finals "deja vu"

Featured Replies

This past saturday the Breds won on a 4 yard TD pass to #45 (Tyler Lyon) with 00:26 seconds remaining. Back in 1984 the Breds beat Ft. Knox, 12-7, for their 1st state title on a 25 yd TD pass also caught by #45 (Rob Messmer) with 00:26 seconds remaining.

I read that was only the 5th catch for Lyon all year. I believe that Messmers catch was his only catch that year. Two receivers that were used very little in that regard.

Thats a pretty cool fact Lawboy, but I think you might have a little to much time on your hands today haha.

Interesting. Where do you find this stuff? :idunno:

My brother was on this team. I was there at the game and recall Messmer's catch and "wild" run to the endzone on the pass from QB Pat Richardson. I knew there was very little time on the clock, but my brother informed me that there was 26 ticks left.

Correct.

That was Tyler Lyon's 6th catch and 3rd TD, however he had 2 called back because of penalties during the season and 2 that were ruled to have touched the ground before the catch. My daughters boyfriend is "MONEY"!!!!!:notworthy:

Messmer had many catches that year, but this was his only TD. Monk (Messmer) was a beast. Congratulations to the Breds!!!

Where did you win semi-finals games in 84 and 12...some more Deja vu

Bingo. The Briar Patch has been very, very good to the Breds.

Little better in 83

You're right. The 83 team played a great game in Newport. That was a sad night.
