Doug Preston to Louisville Western?

Featured Replies

He was at Rowan 3 years I know of.

I have also heard that their main back, Stevens, is not at Bath Co. Does anyone know if this is true?

Well Palmer I guess the term "turnaround" is pretty vague. Since you don't know who McDowell is you probably don't know a whole lot about the program at Rowan; where it is now and where it was when Preston took over. Either way Preston is on his way to Western High School as head coach. In case you don't know Preston has worked for many great coaches so his background says a lot. He has been part of some state titles etc. How many teams have you coached with or how many times have you been part of a state championship? Have you ever played football? :thumb:

Wow there Mike. I have already stated that I only talked to someone from Rowan Co., and that someone is in the football program, not that I was from there or know about the details the program. I do know where it was when he took over, and I know where it is now, in terms of competiveness against local teams. Rowan is more competative now than a few years ago, but not where the Rowan community expected it to be, was my thinking. I could be wrong being that I don't live there but only talk to some of the fans.

I wished Coach Preston well wherever he goes, if you remember reading it in my post. No need to get excited over nothing. I did play some high school football, but have never coached football. Does this mean I know nothing about the sport at all or have no right to state a simple opinion about whether a program has or has not turned around? I guess "turnaround" is vague, and what I think it is must be different than what you consider a turnaround. No big deal. I know of his football background and the championships, so no need to be so aggressive. His history speaks for itself.

By the way, who is McDowell since you are obviously in the know with all the inner workings of the Rowan Co. program? Is he the former coach of Lawrence Co.?

TigerKat,

Doug Preston will be fine at Western. He's a great coach and a great man. L'ville Western got a good one here and with what they have comming back the Class AA, Region II District 4 better watch out!

I have never stated that is is not a good man nor coach, stop putting words in my mouth. I just said he will have his hands full with the school and the issues that come with it. It is over 70% african american I know and if he has never dealt with a very diverse team he will need learning time. They rae talented but the right guidance is needed in study hall and on the field.

If I am not mistaken this was his first year at Rowan County. Louisville Western I think would be an attractive job to alot of coaches.

Not many form around here applied form what I gather.

Coach Preston has been and asst. at Danville Which has a high % of African Americans and he was also the head coach at Paris which have a high % of African Americans. So I think that he will do just fine.

Good luck Coach P :thumb:

Gary McDowell was the last coach to win games at rowan county and also took a few teams to the playoffs. He is a great coach and motivator, if he was to get the job he might be able to take the program up a few notches and the community of Morehead might be a little happier with him now that Lowes has moved into town. Is there a new superintendent in Rowan Co.? Would Mcdowell take the job.

 That's funny!

Kevin Brown from West Carter HS

I don't know anything about him thinking about leaving but he is A CLASS ACT along with his brother Brian!

Not intending to be aggressive Palmer. I was just giving you some basic info and was curious to your football background so we could talk a little deeper on the subject. Sorry if you misunderstood. Have a nice day.

Marvin Moore is the new super. He and Gary go back a long way. I think if it were offered, he would take it.

Head,

Here are some facts. Rowan finished the season with over 50 players the last 2 years. There has been only one coach depart the program the last two years. That coach was a volunteer that Coach P stood up for when the super wanted him gone last year. I do know that Preston did finally dismiss the coach toward the end of this season because of the way that coach was handling some of the players. Regardless anyone can post their opinion. But i think some people just don't like to work hard. Facts about Paris. Preston started there with only 9 players at his first practice. I have no doubt you know coach P because he tells the Paris story all the time. He had no kids quit at Paris; he lost some good players to injury and finished the season qualifying for the playoffs. They played their last game with 10 kids (by the way Paris has since went through 3 head coaches and their numbers run around 18-22 kids on a given year; they have number problems regardless of who coaches there). That is why they decided to sit the playoffs. They were considering the safety of the kids. Which i think was the right thing to do. If he was so bad for the (Rowan) kids I don't think the seniors would have cried their eyes out at the banquet like they did. I also know the players cried when he told them he was leaving for Western. As for his wife's race i would bet he could care less what you think about that. The topic is Preston going to Western not where he has been or who is mad at him at Rowan or what race his wife (or top assistant) is. But you have a right to your opinion. I do know he and his family are very excited to be going to Western and Louisville. I wish them the best.

Best of luck to this coach, don't know much about him but he will definately have a different setting at Western, off Dixie Highway, than in Rowan Co. He has some athletes to juggle around, some STUD running backs. The only problem he has to deal with physically is depth and an offensive/defensive line. Discipline will be a factor that needs to be established. I have the utmost respect for the warriors after playing against them and scouting them this year as a senior at Christian Academy. I hope the best for Western and the entire coaching staff.

Actually Western is a tough place to coach because it is a tough place to teach. They have some talent. Wright did a good job of bringing some discipline into the program which was a doormat for awhile. Western was as bad as Shawnee at one time. Shawnee has some athletes and when they take the field they look good. But they just don't have the discipline and character they need to win. Western has some talent. Wright did a great job. Western still has some talent. Preston was an assistant at Danville. He should have some experience both teaching and coaching in the environment he is in. I think he will be a good fit.
