Guess Mayfield will have to go back to winning championships the way they used to, you know, before Jackson. The big worry coming into this season was what kind of line play Mayfield would get, I would say they passed with flying colors. Suspect that Mayfield would rely a little more on the pass next year, but with most of the guys in the trenches returning expect Jake Guhy's numbers to look like a video game.

No wonder The Ashland area has NEVER had a state title in Class A or NEVER won region against a NKY team( not to mention the rest of the state) ! KHSAA needs to flip the format back to the old days...Fairview most likely would not have made it past Bellevue in the 2nd round. There have been multiple years that The NKY A district has swept that region.

Very funny...or odd, rather...thing happening in this thread. I don't think enough credit is being given to EITHER team. Fairview was absolutely where they belonged. They were big, and tough, and well-coached. And deceptively fast. No doubt they deserved to be playing for a state title.

 

But on that day, Mayfield was bigger, and tougher, and just as well-coached. Nothing deceptive about their speed, though. (I'm reminded, too, of the Robert Downey Jr. quote from Avengers: "We have a hulk." Mayfield fans can look at all of the well-deserved pre-game accolades from Fairview and respond with "We have a Jonathan Jackson.")

 

I'll be called silly (not for the first time) for saying this, but I don't think any team that played yesterday could have beat Mayfield. Highlands would have given them a great game, but Jackson was not going to let his team lose. To anybody.

 

I'll concede that there might be a better football player in the state than Jackson (emphasis on the "might"), but I won't back down from my claim that that a single player has as much affect on a game's outcome than that young man. As soon as he walks on the field, the other team is at a disadvantage. Even if he doesn't make a play. His presence alone (I call it a "swagger", but it's not cockiness...just self-awareness that he's a man amongst boys) changes the game.

 

Put him on any college football team in America...ANY team...and that team is better than they were before. I don't care how tall he is or how fast he is or about any other skill that can be measured. He's got "IT", and it's a shame that supposed recruiters at the "big" schools don't see it. My five-year old daughter could see it, and she doesn't even have a college degree (though she has received "star student" stickers several times this year as a true-kindergartener...my wife and I, along with her teachers, discussed the possibility of a redshirt, but immediate learning-time was too much to pass up.) I'd hate to see her move out at such a young age, but she would be a real asset to Kentucky's football staff.

 

And before you label me a homer...I'm not from Mayfield, and have seen my team suffer many heart-breaking losses to them. I liked it when we beat them. A lot. But I also have an appreciation of greatness. Secretariat, the '96 Wildcats, the 2012 Wildcats, my daughter, the Beatles, legendary PA announcers such as Bob Sheppard and Sherm Feller...the list goes on. Add the 2012 Mayfield Cardinals and Jonathan Jackson to that list.

 

I did all this "gushing" just to say this...Fairview was a great football team, and should not be judged by this one game. I said it in the prediction thread: A LOT of great football teams have lost to Mayfield. Fairview should be given the credit they so rightfully deserve and earned.

Well said Jody Porter... I 100% agree with you on Fairview. They deserved to be in this game and I think they were the 2nd best team in 1a.. The RBs were awesome.. The line on both sides of the ball were big, strong and athletic.. I don't think you can judge this team on 1 bad game.. They were very talented all the way around.. IMO, being the 1st time on that stage had them a little overwhelmed and in awe and those nerves cost them a few of those fumbles.. They had an opportunity to be very much in the game in the 1st half, having the ball inside Mayfields redzone twice and coming away with no points due to turnovers.. Mayfield has been notorious this year in the playoffs for getting off to a slow start(Holy Cross, KCD, Beechwood) and then making adjustments and dominating the 3rd qtr and that's what happened here.. Totally different team in the 2nd half.. Also, Fairview's kicking game cost them.. when you're at midfield and forced to punt and still give the ball back to Mayfield at there own 40-45 yd line kills you, when in that instance, you should be able to turn the field position to your advantage, but, they never could manage to do that.. I also think that there schedule hurt them.. Say what you want, but, the last 7-8 weeks, they were hammering folks and hadn't been in a position to have to play from behind or play a hard 48 minutes and you could tell, they were a little shell shocked and had no clue how to react.. The fumbles hurt, but, what really killed them was the 3rd qtr.. They had to get a stop on that opening 2nd half drive and Mayfield took it right down the field and scored.. Even then, they needed to answer, but, went 3 and out and gave up another quick score.. at that point, they were done.. The fact that Mayfield has a balanced attack with the pass and run really kept them off balance and like others have said, when you have a guy like Jonathan Jackson pounding you on every run, that wears on you especially later in the game.. But, like I said, Fairview was deservent to be in that game and just ran into a very focused, balanced, well coached and talented team and add in the turnovers and a few big plays and it snowballed.. Same thing happened in 09 when Mayfield got beat by LCA.. No way they were that much better than what the score indicated, but, things happen, snowball and there you go..

All I can say is WOW!!!!!!!

I know NKy has beaten up that district in the past, but, quite frankly, Fairview was better than any 1a team in NKy this year, including Beechwood and I never saw Raceland, but, it's quite possible, they would have won the NKy district this year, too. Even Nicholas Co was on par with Bellevue.. Don't look at this score and make a determination that they weren't good.. Mayfield played a very, very good game and a few turnovers made the score alot worse than what it should have been.. Yes, Beechwood played closer, but, Mayfield had to play Bwood on their home field after a 5 1/2 hr drive.. On the flip side, they drove 2 hrs to BGreen and Fairview had the 5 1/2 hr drive.. I trully believe if mayfield had played Bwood today, there wouldn't have been much difference if the turnout..

If they play like they did today, yes. If it is to potential, i like that game.

I saw Mayfield play both Beechwood and Fairview ... I would pick Beechwood to beat Fairview, without a doubt.
