msjball4 Posted January 18, 2006 Posted January 18, 2006 Coach Letton comes into his first year at Catholic only returning 5 starters total. He loses the qb,rb(not Shane Israel),wr,te,5 lineman,3 d-lineman,3 dbs,and 2 lbs. The five starters are Shane Israel, Jake Locknane, Ben Revere, Wes Caldwell, and Winston Guy.
oneijoe Posted January 18, 2006 Posted January 18, 2006 They'll be a lot of second-guessing his offensive play calling if he tries to run Coach Sphire's offense (some are implying this might be attempted on another thread). Coach Letton's recipe for success at Prestonsburg was oriented around aggressive, technically sound defensive play and low-risk offensive play out of the I.
thepeopleschamp Posted January 18, 2006 Posted January 18, 2006 He may only have 5 starters returning but the cupboard is not bare and outside of Harrison Co. and the occasional W/E. Jessamine uprising, their district is weak. I look for Catholic to do well however their semistate is loaded with good teams next year, Highlands, Cov. Catholic, Bell Co., Rockastle Co., Ashland etc...
footballfever Posted January 18, 2006 Posted January 18, 2006 I,m not real sure about his resume but I believe his 1st year at Montgomery County he was left a good team by Paul Rains and went 8-3 and lost 1st round of playoffs but only 8-32 after the 1st year.and dint make playoffs at all. What were his records before Montgomery and were all was he.
corners in Posted January 18, 2006 Posted January 18, 2006 Maybe Kaelin Ammons at Franklin County will have something to say about Harrison, East or West jessamine being better than FCHS in a WEAK district.
MY ADIDAS Posted January 19, 2006 Posted January 19, 2006 I remember when Letton was at Prestonsburg. This guy is solid.
thepeopleschamp Posted January 19, 2006 Posted January 19, 2006 He may(Ammons) but that doesn't change the fact that this is a very weak district.
thepeopleschamp Posted January 19, 2006 Posted January 19, 2006 and I also never said they were better than FCHS and had you read my post , you would have seen that, I merely stated that in the past the only teams that could muster a challenge for supremacy in this area to Catholic now and Boyle earlier were those three.
freshstart Posted January 20, 2006 Posted January 20, 2006 Who is in the running for the QB position at Lex Catholic? There is a very good nucleus of players returning, mostly skilled.
strongopenyon Posted January 20, 2006 Posted January 20, 2006 Coincidently, Coach Letton's son was a freshman quarterback last year at Lexington Catholic. Recently, Catholic has started sophomore quarterbacks who get better each year (Neff, Doss, Burke). Wonder if Coach Letton will follow that plan with his son?
Podgie Posted January 21, 2006 Posted January 21, 2006 Letton's track record of taking over an established program is not that good. He started off strong \(6-0) at Montgomery in his first year but ended up losing a lot of games towards the end of the season. I remember Lincoln beating him 21-20 in overtime for their first loss in 1997, this seemed to start the slide. His second season was successful, but after that a major downward slide began. Montgomery has never recovered. Time will tell though, he may have learned from the past a be successful in this setting.........

If you take a look at what he did at Prestonsburg or talk to the fine folks there then they will tell you what he can do with a solid program. I along with the Lex Cath family have all the confidence in the world in his abilities. The kids are excited and working hard already there.
oneijoe Posted January 21, 2006 Posted January 21, 2006 To expand on Stick1's comments... The thing he had at Prestonsburg (and should also have at LexCath) that he didn't at Montgomery Co. is ... folks (players, parents, alumni, local businesses) who insisted on putting a quality team on the field on Friday. And more importantly, backed that desire up with financial and moral support of the program. (If it ain't backed up, it's just "lip service")
Chicks dig Scars Posted January 21, 2006 Posted January 21, 2006 If you take a look at what he did at Prestonsburg or talk to the fine folks there then they will tell you what he can do with a solid program.Wasn't he fired at Prestonsburg?
stick1 Posted January 21, 2006 Posted January 21, 2006 Wasn't he fired at Prestonsburg? Not that I know of. I know he won a couple of Regional Championships and took Pburg to the carpet so I wouldn't think so.
