I said it when Cooper played CC that I thought Durham was the best running QB in the area hands down. I still stand by that. His passing is so so, but he is an absolute beast when it comes to running the ball. The best, no one even comes close in my opinion when it comes to a running QB in the area.

 

Now as far as what colleges are looking for. The #1 recruiting tool comes down to attending camps period.

I don't know if he has attended a lot of camps so far or not, but that is where kids get spotted especially by D1 schools. You can put up great stats during the year but if you don't go to a lot and I mean a ton of camps, you will not get noticed the majority of the time. It's kind of a shame if you ask me. There are great football players in the area that play other sports in high school also and do not get the chance to go to a lot of camps because their other sports start up as soon as football season is over and while the camps are being held etc. Works the same for baseball also, baseball camps across the country go on during football season. It hurts those multi sport athletes today. I know for a fact, unfortunately my son has been invited to half a dozen baseball showcases this year from Baltimore to Florida and has not been able to attend any because of football season etc. That will cripple his chances of getting a nice scholarship, and the same has happened when it comes to football camps he should attend but can't due to baseball going on at the time.

 

I know several area players that just play football and have attended a lot of camps and they are getting a lot of looks from colleges and it is simply because they attended these camps. The camps are where the college scouts see the players first hand and where they evaluate the talent they have etc. If a kid doesn't attend camps he will not get noticed or recruited a lot at all unless his coach puts in the time to send the tapes out etc. The players I know are getting a ton of interest from D1 schools, and one of the best started getting interest from some huge D1 schools last year as a sophomore and he didn't even start yet on his HS team. It was all due to attending camps. So for Durham I can't stress enough if he wants to get a lot of interests, he needs to attend a ton of camps this off season period.

That is great. The recruiting scene is driving to earlier and earlier actions.

 

Had a discussion with a D1 Lacrosse coach recently on this. Lacrosse is really bad about trying to lock in kids early. He said that all the coaches know its nuts but have no answer since they are all trying to lock in kids earlier and earlier.

Many D-1 colleges have already finished up their 2013 classes and are looking ahead to 2014 already.

Same exact thing was said about Tim Tebow in college. I'd always said watching him play at Florida that I'd have HATED having to try and defend what Urban Meyer did with him offensively.

 

Now I know why I always said that.

 

When you HAVE to defend against him running the way he can (i.e., having LB's play run first, run second, then MAYBE consider pass), it leaves receivers WIDE OPEN and thus that kind of QB doesn't HAVE to be as accurate as Peyton Manning or Drew Brees. Though, I'll say I've seen Durham make some VERY nice throws on scouting film this year (especially throwing vertical and hitting receivers in-stride).

 

SOME 1AA school that runs an offense modeled after Urban Meyer's HAS to look at Durham.

Yes and no.

 

Getting seen is key as you point out. The Barker family travled about 7k miles this past summer.

 

Not every kid can afford or do what the Barker family did. I am just saying this as a whole.

There's a lot more to getting DI recognition/offers beyond the Friday night high school game. This has become a full time effort for parents to showcase their kids to the schools, not for the scouts to come looking. The percentages for DI offers are extremely low, so Tyler as well as any above average high school player has to go all out selling themselves to the colleges area recruiters and coaches. Some of the best athletes are passed over because because they sit back and expect their high school coach to do all the work, or expect every top schools recruiter to come knocking on their door. It only happens that way for very few elite football players.

 

THIS COULD NOT BE SAID ANY BETTER!!! The problem for Tyler and several NKY players is flat out EXPOSURE!! I've been in this area quite a while and seen this. If he has not been on the "circuit" (i.e. combines, camps, personally initiated unofficial visit, etc) most players are not going to get found. As proof, if you look at the last two "high profile" players from this area to get major D1 offers, that did not go to Highlands, in Pike and Barker, there parents have spent countless hours taking their sons everywhere they possibly could and getting the exposure they need. Cincinnati is a hot bed for athletes vs. a much greater level of competition so the reality of it is, is recruiters will hit So. Ohio, stop at Highlands and maybe CovCath, and jump right over the rest of NKY and keep heading south. It's not that there are not good players who probably could play at that level it all comes down to a recruiters budget which is small believe it or not.

 

So in a nutshell, if NKY players want to get to that level they are going to have to sell themselves cuz the phone won't ring by itself. KY as a whole is not a FB State so the parents, players, and if you can get him to, the coach have to put in the work. It can be done but as I have said in previous posts, 75% of all FB scholarship offers go out after the players Jr year, that is FACT.

Good. Looks like a solid QB. My advice would be to market himself to FCS/NAIA. Not a lot of FBS QBs emerge the summer of their senior year(fair or not fair).

 

If he thinks he is a D1 QB I'd also tell him to consider JUCO.

What makes you say it's not right? You're going to tell colleges how to best spend their time and recruiting budget?

 

Colleges came to Hebron that were never seen this summer by any Conner player.
