What do the top ten cities (over 250,000) with the highest poverty rate all have in common?

Detroit, MI (1st on the poverty rate list) hasn't elected a Republican mayor since 1961

Buffalo, NY (2nd) hasn't elected one since 1954

Cincinnati, OH -(3rd) since 1984

Cleveland, OH -(4th) since 1989

Miami, FL - (5th) has never had a Republican mayor

St. Louis, MO - (6th) since 1949

El Paso, TX - (7th) has never had a Republican mayor

Milwaukee , WI -(8th) since 1908

Philadelphia, PA -(9th) since 1952

Newark, NJ -(10th) since 1907

Einstein once said, 'The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.'

It is the poor who habitually elect Democrats .... yet they are still POOR.

"You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich.

You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong.

You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift.

You cannot lift the wage earner up by pulling the wage payer down.

You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred.

You cannot build character and courage by taking away people's initiative and independence.

You cannot help people permanently by doing for them, what they could and should do for themselves."

Many of these cities were absolutely slammed by the loss of industrial jobs in the last half century. They've been further done in by the loss of a tax base due to white flight to the suburbs over the same time period.

You're assigning an extremely simplistic explanation to an extremely complex problem.

These people are broke; they're not broke because they vote Democrat.

Are you saying that leadership has nothing to do with economic conditions?

I'm a registered Republican and this might be one of the dumbest things I have ever read. This has to be an email blast sent out by Donald Trump. Things like this makes Republicans look bad. It's no wonder Republicans can't get the blacks and Mexicans to vote Republican.

Was an e-mail, we have tons of fact checkers here on BGP and the title says "if true"........what else you want?

Sometimes, yes.

We could have had Steve Jobs or Bill Gates as mayor and it would not have helped Martinsville, VA. The area was built on Textiles and Furniture and all of that is now being made somewhere else. Highest unemployment rate in VA since 1999.

If you are conservative republican, then I am a big green horse. Nowhere in the text was anything mentioned about Blacks or Mexicans. Memphis can be added to that list BTW. Those on entitilements, and they aren't all minorities, are mind-washed to believe conservatives are going to take away their benefits. So they keep voting for perpetuation of the same system that keeps them right where they are.

Okay then. What are the demographics of those 10 poorest cities? I'd be willing to bet there are a high concentration of blacks and Mexicans in those cities populations.

Registered republican is what I said so I don't guess you are a big green horse. Well, you might be. I'm probably more moderate than most but I am far from conservative. That's two completely different things.

Abraham Lincoln

Lincoln never, ever said those words...in his time, he would have said the exact opposite!

Summary of the eRumor:

Alleged quotes from Abraham Lincoln about the poor, the weak, prosperity, workers, class hatred, and character.

The Truth:

These words are often attributed to Abraham Lincoln, but according to the book They Never Said it: A Book of Fake Quotes, Misquotes, & Misleading Attributions, they are not from Lincoln.

The quotes were published in 1942 by William J. H. Boetcker, a Presbyterian minister. He released a pamphlet titled Lincoln On Limitations, which did include a Lincoln quote, but also added 10 statements written by Boetcker himself.

They were:

1. You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift.

2. You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong

3. You cannot help the poor man by destroying the rich.

4. You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred.

5. You cannot build character and courage by taking away man's initiative and independence.

6. You cannot help small men by tearing down big men.

7. You cannot lift the wage earner by pulling down the wage payer.

8. You cannot keep out of trouble by spending more than your income.

9. You cannot establish security on borrowed money.

10 You cannot help men permanently by doing for them what they will not do for themselves.

People who got the pamphlet thought the 10 statements were written by Lincoln and they have been distributed widely under Lincoln's name.

Just more people trying to hate on President Obama through false means...thought you might want to know.

America's richest cities. Non email information.

America’s Richest Cities - 24/7 Wall St.

10. Poughkeepsie, NY-republican mayor

9. Boulder, CO-independent mayor

8. Boston-democrat mayor since 1930

7. Anchorage, AK-Last 3 mayors are R,D,D

6. San Francisco-no listed parties on the ballot. The previous mayor was from 2004-2011 and is currently the Lt. Gov of California. Democrat.

5. Trenton, NJ-democrat

4. Oxnard, CA-couldn't find anything current

3. Bridgeport, Conn-Democrat since 1991

2. San Jose, CA-last two are democrats

1. Washington DC-democrat since 1979

As it is plain to see political party has nothing to do with how much rich or poor a city is. Leadership? Possibly. Political affiliation? Not a thing.

I'm glad you have a sense of humor! Of course there is a high correlation between big city, ethnic minority and poverty. In addition to that other correlating factors are eduction, age of parent (s), number of siblings, etc. As someone mentioned before, it is much more complex that Repub. or Democrat. However, I think we know the chances are of a "reformer" having a chance to be elected in these areas.

On another slant.....I don't think combining smaller, rural areas to Detroit is an apples to apples situation. For instance, in one smaller population area wages may be low, but housing costs may be low also, so a person can enjoy a reasonable quality of life versus the same income in a big city.
