This one was a hard hitting, hard fought game – much closer than the score indicates. Belfry’s defense is very good and stopped Ashland’s running game cold. But, the Tomcats managed some big plays to get the win on senior night.

Congratulations to the Tomcats!

Excellent game that both teams needed,,, final score not indicative of how close it was.

Both teams lose their top HB's early in the 1st Half with Baker suffering a lower leg injury and Belfry's Johnson suffering an apparent concusssion.

Ashland converted a Belfry muff in the redzone and hit a long pass to jump out 13-0 early in 2nd. Pirates responded with a 31 yard TD pass to make it 13-7. Tomcats found paydirt on a beautiful catch and run over the top to take a 21-7 lead into the Half.

Pirates controlled the 3rd Quarter and rallied converting a shanked punt to make it 21-14. The Pirates seemingly was wearing Ashland down and finding their groove as they converted another TD pass, but the XP would fail leaving the score 21-20.

Belfry's defense gets the ball ack and the Pirates promptly marched it down the field on a long time consuming drive and were in the redzone 1st and 10. The Tomcats were winded and perhaps the play of the game then came on an injury. A Tomcat lineman camped up and after a 3-4 mminute timeout it seemed the Tomcats were able to catch their breathe and settle down as they came up with a key stop.

The teams exchanged the ball. Belfry had utterly stonewalled the Tomcat running game, and Ashland probably had less than 50 yards in the 2nd Half when with about 3:00 to go Massey broke free for a 66 yard TD, the score was 28-20 but Belfry still had a pulse.

Pirates metriculated downfield and was inside the Tomcat 30 with over 1:00 to go. The Tomcats sack Warren and Belfry gets an inopportune Personal Foul forcing a long yardage situation. The next play Warren is crushed and fumbles, the Tomcats scoop and score to ice it.

Hats off to Ashland as they made critical plays and big plays, and their defense answered the call and came up with big stops at key times.

Any idea how bad the injuries were?

It sounds as if baker is a sprain and not a break.

Johnson was "knocked out cold" and after ragining consciousness walked off on his own before being taken by ambulance obviously for tests and a CT Scan.

Could have been much worse, but you probably can expect both to miss a couple weeks at least.

Belfry scored the potential game tieing touchdown with about 3 1/2 minutes to go but missed their XP leaving the score at 21-20.

Less than a minute later Ashland's Massey broke a nice 66 yard run for Ashlands only real damage on the ground all night to put the Tomcats up 28-20.

Belfry put together an effective two minute drive to move inside the Ashland 30 (thereabouts). The QB, who was hounded, hurried and hammered all night fumbled the ball on a sack and Ashland's DL Justice ran it back for a TD to drive the final nail in Belfry's coffin.

Sounded like a great game for 46 minutes.

I did that once and was almost arrested.

Gosh, that is a high scoring game for this series. Who would have ever thought this is how it would have turned out? Oh, who could have predicted such a thing?
