You can say what you want about Coach Matney, hate him or love him, you have to give him credit, the man can coach, and the man wins, wherever he has been. What he has done at Johnson Central is a testimony to what a great coach, and motivator the guy is. There is no doubt that he has made the Ashland program better by having such a high quality opponent in their district year in, and year out. The fine folks from Johnson Central have every right to be proud of him, and what he has done for their program, school and community. And I feel his comments are dead on. This area gets very little respect around the state. If Johnson Central didn't have to play the district from NKY every year in the 1st rounds of the playoffs, I'm certain they would have made it to Louisville on more than one occasion.

Matney's kids play hard. They always do. I've never had any lack of respect for them, nor does anyone else involved at Cov Cath. Now, respect for Coach Matney...that's a different matter all together. Shall we start with, "What do you mean the films wouldn't play? ...oops, must have been a bad DVD. Sorry."

The film DVDs that they traded to Cov Cath in 2009 and 2010 did not work. I can vouch for that, because they were both handed to me at halftime of the Cov Cath games the week before both years. After hearing the "oh yeah, Matney does that" rumors following the 2009 instance, we ran the DVD down to the coaches' office and popped it in the DVD player as soon as we had it in our hands in 2010. It didn't work, so we found their coach in the stands and informed him. They wouldn't offer to send a replacement - even after I offered to pay for the overnight shipping charges.

I'm making a statement based on the teams they played. I'm sure he does try to schedule other teams. Every coach knows that there are teams you'd like to play, but you just can't work in to both of your schedules. However, if you don't end up playing a team, whether or not you try to schedule them, how does that really apply to the respect your team garners for their schedule?

Johnson Central beat Cov Cath soundly both years. I was never denying that. To answer your question, though, I would say Cov Cath was building itself back up towards being an elite team in 2009 and 2010. I'm not positive that we're there even now, although I'd like to think we are.

 

You can go back and read quite a few threads where I've stated how I feel about Johnson Central. I think year after year they're a very solid team. I, for one, would like to see them in Cov Cath's division - or at least as a yearly game on Cov Cath's schedule. However, when it comes to Johnson County's schedule, as laid out by the coaches, and not by the playoff brackets, I don't feel it's a particularly demanding schedule.

I know for a fact that Raceland tried to schedule a few NKY schools and they said they were unable to travel more then 100 miles to play. Raceland is about 125-150 miles from many of the NKY schools. Johnson Central is about 300 miles from most NKY schools.

I dont believe this because in both of those years Coach Matney was the one that hand delivered the films. Why would he drive three hours to deliver you a blank dvd? I also personally know the man that films and he checks them before it's ever given to Jim to trade. Do you actually think that he would try to do that on purpose? I dont ever here the programs like Highlands,Belfry,Boyle,Breathitt,Ashland,Ironton Oh,or Bell complain about the films from Johnson Central.
