August 28, 201214 yr Took me a second to get "Tingles." Well done. I do believe there are subliminal albeit not very well done racial statements being made. Of course that happened WITHIN the R party to Mr McCain when he ran against President Bush. We've never had a candidate labeled "un-American" or "He doesn't get America" or "He loves Europe" etc. So what's different about this particular candidate that could cause that? Simple IMO. Just like I said Matt Jones is playing to the less than intelligent UK fans these comments are playing to the less educated who can't see it for what it is.

Obama called George Bush un-American and unpatriotic. I, for one, do not view Obama as a patriot and it has zero to with how he looks.
August 28, 201214 yr Obama called George Bush un-American and unpatriotic. I, for one, do not view Obama as a patriot and it has zero to with how he looks. Did he call him a "Food Stamp President?" There are just certain terms that instantly conjure up a face that is black. Are you saying that you do not believe that any of these comments are implying "not white like us?" I'm not asking what YOUR view is . I have no reason to believe you are being anything but genuine.
August 28, 201214 yr Obama called George Bush un-American and unpatriotic. I, for one, do not view Obama as a patriot and it has zero to with how he looks. That's silly talk. I can't think of a single elected official ever that I would say is unpatriotic. Even the misguided ones were patriotic.
August 28, 201214 yr Did he call him a "Food Stamp President?" There are just certain terms that instantly conjure up a face that is black. That is completely subjective. Number of people on food stamps is obviously high. To point that out and blame it on the person holding office is not racist.

The average white American has a picture of black woman with numerous kids and no husband when they hear "welfare" or "food stamps." The fact that whites are using it more doesn't change the perception and that's always being played to.

August 28, 201214 yr According to who/what? I have never heard of this. According to me as in it's my opinion.
August 28, 201214 yr According to me as in it's my opinion. I figured cause I know that isn't factually accurate
August 28, 201214 yr I figured cause I know that isn't factually accurate You don't know that at all. It's why President Reagan didn't say "welfare recipients" but, rather, "welfare queens." He knew exactly what picture the voters he was trying to appeal to would have in their mind.
August 28, 201214 yr "Welfare queen" is a well known racial stereotype. Considering there are ample economic indicators one could use, some people question Gingrich's deployment of this one specifically. Considering other statements by Gingrich and his partisan brethren, and considering who they are making them to, it's fair to point out the possible racial undertones.
August 28, 201214 yr I googled "welfare perception" and found a book on it. The author determines that race plays a big part in why Americans hate welfare. http://www.asu.edu/mpa/Bartels.pdf This isn't rocket science. We can talk all we want about how the "race issue" has gotten better but it's still played to quite often. Whites picture blacks when they talk welfare and blacks picture old white men when they talk about "the man" or govt leaders and programs.

Yep, and it's really, really insulting when others act incredulous about it, as though they can't imagine such stereotypes are actually used in this country, despite the fact that race-baiting is one of the things our country does best.
