I almost felt sorry for the Enquirer this morning. There was a nice picture of Beechwood's Nussbaum and Erdman that was linked to the article on tonight's SK game. Sadly, the headline with the picture states that the Tigers are 2A. Nice try though.

 

Many people at the Enquirer are clueless.

Don't know if anyone else noticed, the article on Holy Cross and Cooper was titled "Indians take on 5A Conner". I don't care what excuses the enquirer has but that paper would fail any English 101 college entry course. C'mon man at least proof read the article. Cooper fans should be upset and who could blame them. Get it right or don't print it.

 

I didn't read it, but wouldn't be surprised at all by this. I couldn't tell you how many times I have read articles from various sections of the paper in the past without catching bad grammar, spelling errors, and other basics of writing.

I miss and need the newspaper sports page. Please , Please , Please give the kids the write up they deserve. Nothing is better then geotta on a Saturday moring and going thru the newspaper and reading all the football stories. Not only that , what will these boys have to show their grandchildren? It means more on newspaper print than a copy of an internet page. Internet counts also, it is just another new avenue. Gotta have both.

 

:thumb: Couldn't agree more. Always look forward to reading the high school sports each morning with breakfast and especially on Saturday mornings. Lately not much to read. It is a shame for these kids not to get more coverage.

Correct, but they did in part because they treated their current customers at the time like garbage, and have very bad business practices and delivery service.

Skinny knows just how many times I have written to the head of the Enquirer and indeed I did get answers back but I honestly and truthfully think that:

1) The woman has no idea how important HS sports are to the community2) How big a marker NKy is.

 

I honestly think the LHL is missing the boat for a lot of extra business by not putting out a NKy edition of their paper. I would have said the CJ but they and the Enquirer are owned and operated by the same parent company!

 

No question, high school sports is huge in this area and they just don't get it!

They also messed up the Simon Kenton/ Beechwood headline...stating that Beechwood is 2A and not 1A.

I agree but it is still a microcosm of the lack of professional journalism.

It wasn't because they had no business either. It's because their business model was poorly executed. They would be thriving had they abandoned Cincinnati and instead honed their total focus on NoKy in terms of news and HS sports. The Enquirer does just what the rest of Cincinnati does — look down its nose at NoKy.

Actually, it's more of an example of what happens when you let bean-counters run the papers instead of real journalists. When staffs are cut to the bone, all that happens is those who are left have tons more piled onto their plate than before. Mistakes happen because there aren't enough hours in the day to do the job.

Jim, you would be the perfect candidate to start a NKY daily paper. You being your own boss would probably work better than someone else being your boss. I am not kidding, I think you could be pretty successful. I assume you have probably looked into this?

Today was another example of how frustrating this all is. We had a plan in place to run a nice full notebook on Tuesdays during the year with the the title Tuesday Morning Quartrback (I love Peter King's Monday Morning Quaterback NFL stuff even if he even goes a bid overboard on content). It was supposed to be a 6 inch lead item (last week I did something on Jeff Marksberry coaching the girls' soccer team to a win and then the football team to a win in the sam week) and this week did something on Holy Cross having experience in bouncing back from a big loss (last season it lost to Beechwood 69-26 to win the state title). Other elements are supposed to be a weekly "power" ranking of top five teams, Players of the Week, and about 5-7 noteworthy items. Well, due to lack of space in print (or honestly poor usuage of space in print) the lead item was cut to four graphs and none of the noteworthy stuff ran (it did run full online). Then someone who edited it misspelled Kevin Silbersack's name on a subhead (had Silversack). Northern Kentucky does deserve better, but I am getting tired of beating my head against the wall quite frankly.

 

Never mind the face that online on NKY.com on Saturday we had a link to "St Henry beats Mariemont." Well, St. Henry did beat Mariemont - St. Henry, OHIO. Of course St. Henry doesn't have football team. My initial fear was a prank a co-worker at The Post pulled on the Enquirer years ago in which he had Holy Cross (when it didn't have football) beating Brossart (when it didn't have football) and it ran in the paper.

 

Trust me when I tell you high school editor Mike Dyer shares the same frustration I do. Honestly anyone with any pride does.
