Is that legit? Or is it because they are the defending champs? I thought they lost almost all of their staters from last season. How many starters return?

Not many at all. I'd have to look at PurpleHaze's scrimmage recap to be certain. I think it was 3 on offense and 3 or 4 on defense. I think their ranking is based on reputation and defending champ status. Not sure if John Hardin should be #2 either. I'd like to see what Dragonfire has to say.

Bowling Green lost 18 of 22 starters from last year. Off the top of my head, they return Nacarius Fant at WR and two linemen on offense, and Quick at LB. I believe that is it. They lost a lot of backups as well.

 

BUT...... Bowling Green has two things going for them. One, they have an immensely talented junior class that includes Fant and Quick. It's a class every bit as big as last year's senior class was. Two, the perk of blowing teams out in such rapid fashion is that you get to play your backups quite a bit. A lot of those guys have on the field experience against the other team's starters, and not all of it was in mop-up time. QB Devin Hayes and RB Blue Tisdale are two that jump to mind that I saw quite a bit of last year even when the game was in the second quarter (Tisdale really even in the first).

 

I could also add that it's Bowling Green, and they don't rebuild they reload. It hasn't always ended pretty for them in the finals, but they have won their region five of the last seven years and played for the state title four times in that span. The Purples very rarely take a real step back. Their #1 ranking is IMO legit in light of what the other teams lost and who the Purples have coming up. The Manual scrimmage was an opening taste of that. The margin for error from last year is likely much, much less though.

Sooooo....looks like that BG/WC tilt is going to be another intense and hard fought game to which the victor will be sitting pretty.

I can't see that at all. With the losses that they had to graduation and players that did not come out this season they will be doing well to finish .500. There were only 14 first place ballots cast. I wonder if that means that only 14 coaches voted in the poll?
