I'm not mad at Lolo. I just don't think she's lived up to all the hype. I didn't know who she was until her pre-race dance routine was posted on here last week.

 

One person is taking the beating for coming in 4th, being hyped, and being pretty.

 

She's a great success story for all Americans and especially those with rough lives.

 

The two US runners who medaled have embarrassed themselves and made themselves look petty which, in kind, has embarrassed a lot of others associated with them.

So is Lolo's media attention the result of her athletic ability and results or her looks?

I don't know or particularly care about how she's perceived, but that New York Times article was awful. It read like a takedown piece in a tabloid.

I honestly haven't paid attention to any of it and I couldn't name the two other medalists or pick them out of a lineup if they robbed me in broad daylight.

 

I do know who Lolo Jones is. I know what she looks like and I know she came in 4th. To me that is the disappointment. If the USA basketball team comes in 4th it's going to be Kobe and Lebron's fault and that is a team sport. Why is that standard lowered for her considering the hype surrounding her? Is it because she cried on the Today show because the media was mean to her? Does her beauty and personality give her a pass? It seems like as a country we make excuses for the athletes we like but we dog the ones we don't like. Serena Williams wins the gold and is dogged for her celebratory dance. Gabby Douglas wins gold and is ridiculed for her hair. Lolo Jones wins 4th after other Americans place and Lolo is the sympathetic figure? I'd be upset too if I medaled but all people want to say is what happened to Lolo? I'll tell you what happened to Lolo...she got beat in the Olympics again.

This was my first thought. She is the Tebow of womens sports. People hate on Tebow for his beliefs. Perhaps its his praising God when given the the opportunity and that in turns leads into his (Tebow's) virginity.

 

I think most people find that odd for 20-somethings.

 

After all, her virginity is part of her story.

I understand why she gets endorsements. She's a good looking athlete. Just like why there are no ugly women on the Weather Channel. I get that too.

 

But I also understand the resentment that Harper and to a lesser extent Wells have toward Jones. They both chose to keep their personal life secret and protect their family. Harper grew up in East St. Louis. She had to borrow someone's spikes to run in Beijing in 2008 because she didn't have an endorsement deal. She still doesn't have one. Wells was raped by her mother's boyfriend several years ago and then they both died in a car crash. And she had to overcome that.

 

There are no secrets about Lolo. She puts it all out there. While the Kournikova comparison may be a little harsh, Harper and Wells feel the same kind of resentment that black people felt toward CNN and Nancy Grace a few years ago over the Laci Peterson disappearance. Laci got the headlines because she was an attractive, pregnant white female. There had been four black women who went missing and presumed kidnapped or dead in the country in the same timeframe but there was no national coverage. Those families resented the coverage Laci Peterson got because of her looks.

 

I think the comparison to Tebow is more on target.

I guess I should be mad at PP92 because he got the nod as a moderator and I did not. I have been around longer and I think my story is cooler than his.
