October 2, 201214 yr Not saying I agree or disagree but that is one of the worst ways to evaluate a player that I've read in quite some time. A player has no control over number of attempts. That's like saying the Royals are a great defensive team because they have more outfield assists than anyone. In reality, they're tied for second to last with a .982 fielding percentage. His range factor is kind of in the middle of MLB 3rd baseman. Out of 15 qualifying 3B Miggy came in at 14th in UZR with -9.2.
October 2, 201214 yr For the sabrematricians among us Trout's bWAR of 10.7 is 20th highest ever for position players.Miggy with a 6.8. When you look at just the offensive bWAR Trout still leads him 8.6 vs 7.4 (that's right, Miggy has a negative defensive bWAR). Fangraphs who does their own calculation of WAR has Trout at 10.3 and Miggy at 7.1.
October 2, 201214 yr Out of 15 qualifying 3B Miggy came in at 14th in UZR with -9.2. Yeah, I looked at the wrong stat. He's definitely bottom of the list. Still don't like number of DP's and attempts taken into account.

October 3, 201214 yr Using Fangraphs WAR, Trout's 10.3 WAR is better than the Houston Astros 10.2 WAR. :scared::scared:
October 4, 201214 yr In the true essence of an MVP, it sure is difficult to vote Trout over Cabrera. One candidate nearly single handedly (I know that's not possible) propeled his team into the playoffs while another's team still fell short. Like it or not, that has to be considered.
October 4, 201214 yr They were talking about this tonight during the Reds game. All the players say Cabrera should win it, all the suits say Trout should.

October 4, 201214 yr Yet the team that didn't make the playoffs had the better record ... They're going home, that's all that matters in MVP talks. No Cabrera and the Tigers don't win the division. No Trout and the Angels still go home. Not taking anything away from Trout but in terms of value, the guy whose team goes to the playoffs because of his ridiculous season has more value. There's a reason no one has won a Triple Crown in 45 years. Specialization in pitching and hitting makes the combination much more difficult. Homerun hitters and guys that drive in runs, sure. Batting average guys that score, sure. Guys that drive in runs, hit home runs AND for average; it just doesn't happen anymore.

Not taking anything away from Trout but in terms of value, the guy whose team goes to the playoffs because of his ridiculous season has more value. Bottom line ... the Tigers won 88 games, while the Angels won 89 and played in the tougher division. Trout actually was the biggest contributor on the better team. Unfortunately for them, the bar was set higher for them.
