Mike Trout: ROY and MVP?

Featured Replies

Bottom line ... the Tigers won 88 games, while the Angels won 89 and played in the tougher division.

Trout actually was the biggest contributor on the better team. Unfortunately for them, the bar was set higher for them.

And they underachieved with a larger payroll. $20mil should be worth more than one win.

You're acting like they had 15 more wins. It was 1.

So ... you're holding that against Trout? He can't help it if the rest of his team underachieved.

That's how it works. Same way your team has an impact on your RBI's, runs scored, ERA..etc.

Doesn't make it right.

Trout and Cabrera should be judged on their own merits, not those of their respective teams.

Dude, how do you score runs and rack up RBI's?

One candidate nearly single handedly (I know that's not possible) propeled his team into the playoffs while another's team still fell short. Like it or not, that has to be considered.
Single-handedly?

Justin Verlander - 6.8 WAR, Austin Jackson - 5.5 WAR, Prince Fielder - 5.0 WAR, Max Scherzer 4.6 WAR, Doug Fister - 3.6 WAR.

They're going home, that's all that matters in MVP talks. No Cabrera and the Tigers don't win the division. No Trout and the Angels still go home.

Not taking anything away from Trout but in terms of value, the guy whose team goes to the playoffs because of his ridiculous season has more value.

There's a reason no one has won a Triple Crown in 45 years. Specialization in pitching and hitting makes the combination much more difficult. Homerun hitters and guys that drive in runs, sure. Batting average guys that score, sure. Guys that drive in runs, hit home runs AND for average; it just doesn't happen anymore.

That is RIDICULOUS. Angels had a better record...

That was the point of "I know that's not possible".

Wow! 1 whole game, which still doesn't get them in the playoffs.

If we want to bring salary/payroll into the MVP discussion then check out how much each player was paid for their win above a replacement player:

Trout - $46,153.85 per win

Miggy - $3,055,555.56 per win

That was the point of "I know that's not possible".
Which means it doesn't have a bearing on it at all...
Wow! 1 whole game, which still doesn't get them in the playoffs.
Which still doesn't matter. The MVP isn't about who got their team into the playoffs -- it's who was the most valuable player. In almost any metric that is Trout.

Using "made the playoffs" is a ridiculous measure. Tigers won in a much easier division with a worse record. Miggy shouldn't get credit for that.

As stated...

Cabrera Pre-Sabermetrics MVP

Trout Post-Sabermetrics MVP

As stated...

Cabrera Pre-Sabermetrics MVP

Trout Post-Sabermetrics MVP

Cabrera MVP for guys over 60.

Trout MVP for everyone else.
