Owens had 21 for Boyd County and VanHoose had 25 for Russell.

Boyd County won this game on the boards. They killed Russell on the Boards. Especially in the first half. Russell was down 10 with 4:04 when Owens fouled out, tied it up with 23 seconds left and got outplayed in overtime.

But here are my two cents:

Boyd Co. is 2 different teams with and without Owens. He's quick,

a pretty good shooter, and an all around play maker. Boyd Co. was

very nearly beaten in this game, and it should have been put away

long before Russell should have had a chance. It was just as much

Russell's fault for losing in OT after they went 1-12 in the FG de-

partment. Besides Owens, Boyd Co. (as seen tonight) only has one

other good shooter from the field ( I don't remember the number),

and one good shooter from the line (#22 I believe), and the former's

effectiveness was greatly reduced, though not eliminated totally,

once #23 went out. Still, though, Boyd was able to greatly out-

rebound Russell, and for that I must credit Boyd.

 

As for Russell...

To help their outside shooting, they need to establish Gill underneath.

He was in a position to post up for some points in the paint, but

Russell didn't get the ball into him. This should free up some room

outside and allow VanHoose, Blaire, Simpson, et al, to shoot the

3-ball. This, of course, is in addition to the aforementioned rebouding

problems.

 

With all this having been said, I think this was a positive experience

for the Devils. They realized that they can capitalize on the weak-

nesses of other teams and come back from a large deficit. However,

it is still a loss and a tough one at home in overtime, and Russell

needs to realize they won't be the best team in the 16th if they do

not work on their own weaknesses.

Excellent team game for Boyd Co tonight after a couple of soul searching practices this week. This win is big for Boyd for the fact that they held on to win the game without Owens in there for the end. Should be a big boost for their confidence and Pratts confidence in his reserves.

It looks like Russell and Ashland might well have been overrated before the season began.

 

Regardless, both Ashland and Russell will be in good shape come District time.

I look for the score to be alot different if Kasey Clark would have played for the Devils tonight. I do want to congratulate Boyd Co. on the win it is always good to beat the Team on the cover of the Preview!!

Having Kasey back will help, but it still doesn't address Russell's

rebounding problem. Certainly it would help the transition game, the

defense, and give another good player to rotate in and out, but Russell's

major problem is getting rebounds and points in the paint.

Congrats to Boyd on the win tonight! As for Ashland and Russell, they were overrated but they will be contenders come March. However, Boyd has one flaw - they can't seem to put teams away when they do get big leads. It has happened several times this season. Nothing special about Russell in that respect. They blew a 17 point lead at Johnson Central just the game before. And they have done likewise in other earlier games this year! Boyd is going to have to put teams away and build on those leads if they want to be a better team!

 

Observe that: (1) Boyd has been having trouble of late in the W/L department; (2) that Owens seems to be fouling out a lot lately (were there any Sheriff's that missed any calls at Russell?); and (3) that Boyd hasn't been building momentum toward the end of games, but losing momemtum toward the end. If Pratt can solve these problems, then he will have himself a very good ball club that can play within and without the 16th. It is encouraging to see that Boyd managed to pull out the win without Owens!!!

I totally agree about Russells inside game tonight, they got killed on the boards and in the paint. They seemed, at least for tonight, to be an almost all perimeter team.

Kasey is a strong physical guard that averages around 7 points and 7 rebounds a game! He also makes big plays defensively. I'd say that could have been a difference in the game tonight. However I haven't seen the game yet I'll probably watch the tape this weekend!

:thumb: that is so on the money as far as your observations. Hopefully tonight will go a long way for the Lions. Instead of laying down without Owens in there, they battled and came out victorious. :banana: :banana: :ylsuper:
