Is CovCath violating Title IX?

Featured Replies

If there's one team that is violating Title IX in this scenario, wouldn't it be the team with the girls?

Maybe so, but ask a girls bball player if they would ever like to play a basketball game where they don't have to get up early and go to school the next day. Traditionally girls played on Monday and Thursday and never had that opportunity.

Don't forget a Monday game usually means a Sunday practice while the boys can get Sunday off. That is a huge family and church day.

I'm all for that.

However, there was an article last year that says this quest for equality is costing many schools significant needed revenue.

So we should be a $$$ amount on sending the message to our young ladies that they are equal in importance with the young men in our society?

I know you did not mean to say that but it can be read that way.

This whole thread is minutia!

Nobody would be violating Title IX as long as it doesn't happen too often. HHS is only playing on one Friday night.

I truly meant that they should be treated equally. I also meant that there is a cost to that in most cases that affects girls as well as boys. Its not as if there is not a downside to flipping the schedules.

G - How are the girls at those schools not being showcased? The argument at dual-sex schools is that if girls get the opportunity to play on Friday nights, A)its fair and B)it will cause students/parents that normally would not go to a Thursday night girls game to suddenly appear at a Friday night game. (I doubt that has proven to be true BTW). So, if Dixie boys take the night off so that the Dixie girls can play on Friday, what does that have to do with CCH? Again, its a HUGE jump to say that this will somehow affect the Dixie girls attendance.

Second point: Its about money. Maybe. However, this game could be played Wednesday afternoon at 4:00 or Thursday night at 10:30 and they're going to pull in a huge crowd. The fact that its on Friday will have minimal(ie insignificant) impact on the gate.

If your argument is about perception, that's fine. Its completely different than "fairness" to the Dixie girls, though.

I think it is perception (but perception is reality for many people). The private schools are fighting a war right now so you would think the private schools would apply maximum common sense with issues like this. The public schools will view this as CCH taking advantage of the rules and it is not going to sit well. I am not saying it is wrong, I am just saying it violates the spirit of Title 9 and CCH really needs to think these decisions through because decisions like this could adversely affect every private school in Kentucky. As a matter of fact, since this issue (the public/private war) is so critical right now maybe decisions like this should be made at the diocese level.

And I never used the word fair...

Title IX does not apply to schools who receive nothing from the coffers of the federal government. Most of our private schools come under the sword of Title IX by being members of KHSAA.

So, you're saying playing tonight is fine?

But you can't say that rule doesn't apply to us but we want these rules (be a part of the KHSAA) to apply to us. Of course you can do it, but if things get bad the mirror is where you need to go for answers.

So, you're saying playing tonight is fine?

As long as they're not taking over a certain percentage of "prime times" from the girls, it's fine. I believe they leave that open for tournaments and such. Not sure what the percentage is, though.

Good question but I don't know how much Highlands could do since it is not their home game. In other words, if CovCath says this is the date then Highlands might not have a choice.

Mike Guidugli: Dale, how about Friday night?

Dale Mueller: Boy I'd like to but that's a night for the girls in January. We wouldn't feel right playing on that night.

Mike G: OK, how about Saturday?

Dale: Deal.

CCH can't force a team to play if they don't want to play.

All you say is true.

However, do you truly think that this single event is going to sway a public school AD/principal on his/her vote? I'd say no.

Those that are for separation are for separation. Period. They've already built up the evidence to support their decision. This single event will have zero impact on that person.

Its not about CCH playing on Friday. Its about perceived advantages in the areas of financial aid, unlimited boundaries, financial resources, support.

You may get those that are ALREADY convinced that there should be separation to say "see, I told you" but its irrelevant. Their mind is already made up.

This game tonight will have ZERO impact on the problem IMO.

The following Boys games will be played Monday, January 9th. None of the teams are playing on Friday, January 6.

How much more revenue would they generate if the games were played on Friday instead of Monday? I'm guessing it would be somewhat significant.

Bellevue is hosting Dayton

Dixie is hosting Scott

Newport is hosting NewCath

Now here is where the perception the Guru mentioned comes in.

If Bellevue, Dixie, and Newport are getting less money because of the 9th region effort to not play Boys games on Fridays and CovCath is not by playing on Friday, does that cause problems rightly or wrongly?
