June 9, 201214 yr I read this in the Enquirer this morning and could hardly believe that a school could make such a mistake. How embarrassing for the young girl who spoke at graduation and then was told you actually are not the Valedictorian. June 9, 201214 yr In the big scheme of things this is very miniscule . Feel sorry for the girls involved though .
June 9, 201214 yr In the big scheme of things this is very miniscule . Feel sorry for the girls involved though . I agree. From the article, the girl who was the true valedictorian did get to speak at graduation as one of the salutorians so she wasn't left out of graduation. It may seem like a big deal but it isn't. I don't blame her for being upset and disappointed but much more important things start happening in about three months when they all hit the college campus. I saw where there were also students in the top 10 who were not originally in the top 10. If there is a student who should have spoken at graduation that did not get to speak, that student has a bigger complaint IMO. Definitely egg on the face of the administration. That is something that should have been double and triple checked before being finalized and made public.
June 9, 201214 yr I think the big deal is not that the girls were flip flopped, but that the admistration could let this happen. Heads should roll, but I'm sure they won't.
June 9, 201214 yr As a former valedictorian and current teacher, I can tell you that this is fairly meaningless. Do away with all val/sal positions. Have them read the grad speech in the other thread.

June 9, 201214 yr It was a mistake but in no way should heads roll IMO. I was reading a rant from a former board member. He indicated not the first time the same folks have screwed up like this.
June 9, 201214 yr The Campbell County High School admin has a lot of issues...No I didn't go there but my girlfriend did and she has told me some stories...I also got personal beef due to not being able to take her too her Senior Prom because I was too old , I was 22 she was 18...Her parents called personally and OK'd it and they had a meeting with the admin and they wouldn't budge...Their reasoning me being able to distribute alcohol to underage kids, which I wouldn't do I didn't even know any of the kids and if they want alcohol they are going to find away to get it anyways However a Daughter of an Admin member was aloud to go with her Boyfriend who was also from a different school and already graduated :irked: It's not a huge deal to me but it meant a lot to her, we had been dating for 2 years at the time and now 4 years it was an important memory for her at the time... Neither one of us care now because like a poster above mentioned in 3 months none of this will really matter, there are much more important things happening...No more being sheltered and pampered...I'm sure this girl was probably in tears over this though, girls will be girls especially HS aged girls...I do feel the Campbell County Admin needs to pay more attention to what they are doing and stop worrying so much about themselves...
June 9, 201214 yr Honestly I can see this happening rather easily. Technically they don't have all the final grades from the last set of classes in before they make graduation plans. Therefore if you have 2 kids with the same GPA, and one gets a lower grade somewhere then what, its too late. Im sure this was some sort of issue with honors classes and how they effect GPA calculation. I know at my school, we actually graduated, and had the ceremony on a Saturday, but there were still 2 more class days left the next week.

It's beyond ridiculous and complicated.

June 10, 201214 yr I think it is a big deal. This student worked hard for this honor and deserved it but it didn't happen because of the Administration screw-up. I know in a lot of schools, seniors take their finals several days before graduation so all grades can be calculated and honors given to the appropriate students. It's really not that difficult to get it right! Campbell County screwed it up and that should not be acceptable.

Have you ever calculated these types of points for awards?
