June 5, 201214 yr I mean that the meaning easily changes when said by members of different races. In other words it's always been used unidirectionally by white people to denigrate black people as inferior. That meaning doesn't really make much sense when said between black people (unless Clayton Bigsby is in the picture ). I know that its usage has been fiercely debated since probably the civil rights movement when many began using it satirically as a way to challenge it while others thought it should be abolished all together. Being white I really can't speak to that or to which side of the argument makes the most sense, but I do think the meanings and intentions vary depending on who is saying it. In your example it may not be much different, but it would take a close enough friendship between the two people to establish that the white guy isn't using it the way white people have always used it. That's probably why it's best for white people to not use it at all. I think we probably still have some disagreement here, but I always appreciate how you present an argument & defend your positions. :thumb: We do agree that whites should avoid using the term. I just take it a step further & say blacks would do well to eliminate it as well.

When it is used and how it is used is when all of the different dynamics come into play. I pride myself in being forgiving in situations where people simply may be naive to the word. The rules of the use of the word are a lot muddier than what they used to be.

It's best if no one would use it but I will admit that I am guilty of using it more for comedic effect than anything else but I am still guilty. I am lot better than what I used to be. I'll probably still have to introduce you to my wife like that one day if the opportunity presents itself. I'll try to quit using it after that.

His attitude was much like yours--he used the word, but believed he probably shouldn't. The other was adamant that no one ever use the word. As for meeting your wife, I look forward to that introduction.
June 5, 201214 yr I've had 2 black roommates in my lifetime and we're still friends. I never have heard either of them use that word with either pronunciation.
June 6, 201214 yr It's simply a word I'm not using no matter the crowd. I wouldn't even type it like Gwyneth did.
June 6, 201214 yr I've had 2 black roommates in my lifetime and we're still friends. I never have heard either of them use that word with either pronunciation.Interestingly enough, I can't ever recall hearing that word come from a black woman's mouth, regardless of age, in a casual manner like young men use it. Good point mom, whether you meant it like that, I think that's altogether true.
June 6, 201214 yr I've had 2 black roommates in my lifetime and we're still friends. I never have heard either of them use that word with either pronunciation. I've had a lot more than that. Some of them used it, some didn't. I'll confess to the sparing off-color (no pun intended) remark with them, for comedic effect, but only because we were incredibly close, and still are. It definitely made for fun times when we hung out and listened to NWA, which had to seem a lot like PP92's aforementioned Wu-Tang Clan moments (I'm a big fan of them, too, by the way). My best street cred story is that me and my buddies were the first people in Ky to have the original NWA And The Posse album when one of my best friends' brothers came back from Camp Pendleton in '87 with a box full of tapes while on leave. 8-Ball Rollin, baby.

Easy E. Classic.

As you've mentioned (and I'm the same way), it's near impossible to offend me, and I love off-colored humor, but is it taboo if you and I were telling jokes and the word was a part of the joke?
June 6, 201214 yr Never heard Nicki Minaj or Lil Kim, have ya? Yep, hate em. I am speaking of teens and that kind of language.

As you've mentioned (and I'm the same way), it's near impossible to offend me, and I love off-colored humor, but is it taboo if you and I were telling jokes and the word was a part of the joke? Depends on how funny the joke is. If it's a bad joke I'll get mad. If it's funny then it wouldn't bother me. Just kidding. I'd say probably so. It'd make me feel a little weird for sure. My best friend is easily the most offensive person I know and in discussions on BGP when I have described him most of you say he's racist but even when we tell off color jokes he won't use the N word in the joke. The joke always holds the punchline even if he just says "N word" and not the actual word. I guess once or twice in a joke you'd get a pass. If it became a pattern I'd let you know it makes me cringe. I wouldn't be offended but I'd cringe a little. I'm sure of that. There has been times where he has asked me if he could say it in the joke so I was mentally prepared to hear it and I gave permission so it was all good and it was just him and I. In a public setting he's been respectful of the ground rules.
June 11, 201214 yr Fresh off of vacation, and I come back to this madness? I could've kept my black arse Turks and Caicos. But my girl was getting jealous. Too much reckless eyeballing of the local hot chicks by myself. But I digress. 1.First off the title of this thread makes me wonder does the threadstarter want to use the word and wodners why he cannot get away with it. I'm just wondering. No offense, because I don't know you, champ. 2. I don't care if the suffix is "er" or "a", there is no need for whites to use the word. I used to as a young man, but I grew out of it. Back then, my teeth were sparkling white. LOL 3. I was walking out of a Wal-mart in Canal Winchester, OH back in 2003; a hip hop white guy was walking in with his black friend. I heard the white guy say the word; I said to the black friend, "Damn, you let him talk like that to you." The white kid called me an "old nigga" and said shut up. I beat the dog sh*t out of that kid. Gave him a 37 second reality check. Had to be 16-20 years old. 4. Quoting a song title is no excuse. GP knew better. 5. You'd be surprised at how many white high school football coaches, at an inner city school, have used the word in some form or fashion to tell their black players not to. It is sickening. It's like, "Wow coach, you using it doesn't make it any better. Could care less if you are trying to get them to stop. No need to hear it come off your tongue." Just makes you wonder what these coaches were saying in their private moments aout these kids. 6. The word is used by inner city youths, mainly. It's their patois; vernacular. But please watch the video and I believe this rapper, KRS-ONE, explains the use of the word so effortlessly, so flawlessly and so elegantly. @:57 will explain Rockmom's roomies.
