Shannon Turner resigns at Cooper High School

Featured Replies

I was at a Conner game recently and talking to some parents. One of their daughters is a friend of a girl over at Cooper. I hear they are going to be hard pressed to have 20 girls total come out to play. How does a school that size not have more players? Past ghosts or present coach or both? Would love to hear if this is true or just a rumor.....

Coper winning the district???? Not sure on that but will follow and see how your prediction will turn out. I watched the Conner team a couple times over the summer and to me out of the gate they are the favorite. They look to have a pretty good nucleus and some senior leadership. I think it will be Conner and Ryle out of the distict, not predicting who wins it. I know you cant rule Boone out with Nell but unless they have some strong players coming into the program I think they may have a difficult time performing up to Nell's normal standards. I agree with the other reply stating the Smith girl will be strong, her with Johnson, Oliverio and some of the young talent Ryle always has I think they may end up the best in the distrcit. cant wait till the ball gets tossed and these girls start to play!

Smith now enrolled at Notre Dame.

I have heard several Cooper parents express great enthusiasm for Coach Terwilliger, I have not heard of transfers from Cooper.

I think that by high school a lot of "weeding out" has occurred, particularly with girls, hence lower turn out for try-outs. By this point girls have a grip on their ability level and their desire to work as hard as a HS coach is going to work them. Many just lose interest. There is a lot more fun things to do for a HS kid when compared to running suicide drills. Another factor is the trend to play year round in one sport. The 2 and 3 sport athlete is getting rare. So I would imagine there are some Jag girls who could play hoops but will stick to soccor or volleyball, etc. The Jags should have a good team this year, but it certainly is a tough district.

I've also had this conversation with a parent at a Cooper football game and what they said is that 2 sophomore's have left to go to Boone but several girls maybe coming back from other sports. Also they have never really had a big turnout for tryouts in the past.

Select Volleyball is putting a lot of pressure on girls to compete in that sport during basketball season. It just seems that all the major sports want their athletes engaged 10 - 12 months out of the year which is making dual sport varsity athletes extinct.

Good Luck to the new coach at Cooper - sounds like he has some talent

Yes, good luck to him. I just saw posted that he is looking for two coaches on the Boone County Schools website. What happen, people already jumping off the ship?

I'll say this, you are seeing more publicity with the VB girls getting schollies. Parents think this is the route to go. In addition, more moms are becoming involved with coaching vball and then steering the kids in that direction. I know at the catholic school level, beyond the fifth grade, teams are having a tough time fielding competitive bball teams as kids are playing/forced to choose vball.

I heard from a Conner parent that the posting was just a formality and that Cooper has their staff in place. I did hear they kept the old coaches dad on staff. What is up with that? I am sure people love that move in Cooper land!

If the new coach wants to keep 'the old coaches dad' on his staff I think that is his choice. All is good in Cooperland.

Sure is a whole lot of "he said", "she said", "I hear" and so on taking place. I have sat back long enough and now am going to speak my mind. What happened to Coach Turner was a disgrace. People should be ashamed at how they acted. No matter what happens this year with the team, you can credit that to Coach Turner. Nothing against the new coach, but he is playing with Coach Turners team and their success is her success. And if the new staff wants to keep Coach Griffith on staff, great move. He should be more than a freshmen coach. He knows just as much about basketball as a head coach and the girls are lucky to have him in the program. Good luck Cooper Lady Jags, this fan is cheering you on to great things this year. Coach Turner got it started and she should enjoy the harvest of all her hard work this year!

So what happened to coach Turner?

So what happened to coach Turner?

Read through the entire thread to find out what happened. The people that count know the truth about Coach Turner and she still has a lot of supporters at Cooper. They know what she did for the program. The sacrafices. All the time and energy put into the program. Quite a few girls, faculty, and students miss her. But she is doing well and can sit back and know she contributed to the success of this years team. She had good kids, just had lousy parents and support. She will someday coach again and be successful.

I read through the thread and here is what I got

Talent = High

Expectations = High

Results = Low

Lousy parents = The Blame

Please correct me if I'm wrong.
