May 16, 201214 yr So he is not responsible for throwing the helmet? If you were to throw a helmet and it where to hit someone (directly or indirectly via bouncing off ground) would you not be responsible for it? Why wasn't Cole Hamel arrested for assaulting Bryce Harper? He even admitted to the crime.
May 16, 201214 yr Author He needs to learn to control himself, he is a great young player and with this being his 1st Offense I'll say 10 games...
May 16, 201214 yr Why wasn't Cole Hamel arrested for assaulting Bryce Harper? He even admitted to the crime. I believe players are in most (not all) cases exempt from formal criminal punishment for actions within the game. Their punishment becomes via fines/suspensions, hence why he is not charged with assault.

May 16, 201214 yr So Lowrie didn't assault the ump right? No he did, however his punishment will come in the form of fines/suspensions as I said.
May 16, 201214 yr No he did, however his punishment will come in the form of fines/suspensions as I said. I don't think he did. He threw his helmet down and it bounced and hit the ump. Next time he throws it may bounce a different direction.

May 16, 201214 yr Is this worse than spitting on an umpire? Roberto Alomar got five games for that in 1996.

May 16, 201214 yr Author I'm not sure I buy that this was total accidental argument and that he couldn't control the bounce...If your going to toss your helmet toss it towards the dugout, don't slam it right at the Umps feet that's just asking for trouble...
May 16, 201214 yr Author Is this worse than spitting on an umpire? Roberto Alomar got five games for that in 1996. Probably not however the Major Sports Leagues are trying to make a point with recent suspensions...MLB in general might wan't to set an example with this recent explosion by Lawrie...Many kids go to these games and imitate these players specifically Lawrie in Toronto, he is the face of the Franchise he is Canadian born and Kids really idolize him...With the struggles that a lot of Youth seem to have today with anger and respect it might be a good idea to use this situation as an example of what not to do, It's just a game...That being said with it being Lawrie first incident with an umpire I wouldn't be mad if they only gave him 5 games, made him donate some money to a charity possibly for underprivileged Canadian youth and made him issue a public apology to the umpire in which his helmet hit...Even though the ump made a questionable call...
