LeeCoBobcatFan Posted January 4, 2006 Posted January 4, 2006 Bad officiating has been blamed on almost every single loss this year. Do a search and in most of the threads about games lost, bad officiating has been blamed. Do you think as fans we are quick to point the finger at an easy scapegoat or do you think that the officiating is really that bad every night you team loses. I think that we are too quick to jump on refs because they are easy targets. I scream and yell like most fans but I think at the end of the game, the team lost or won the game.

Here's my take: I think the quality of high school officiating overall has fell away in the past few years. With gas being close to 3 bucks a gallon, it's hardly worth a persons time and energy to take it on. I know several guys that are considering scaling back games next year in baseball/basketball that require more miles to travel and try to get games closer to home. KHSAA needs to look at the need for some pay increase.
EQUUS GREVYI Posted January 4, 2006 Posted January 4, 2006 AGREED! It's amazing how often a ref misses a free throw or makes a bad pass late in the game. I also see refs not cutting off the baseline that leads to the big man's 4th foul early in the 4th quarter.

LeeCoBobcatFan Posted January 4, 2006 Author Posted January 4, 2006 I do think that we expect perfection from humans and that is impossible. I've never refereed but I would say that its much harder than it looks.
kinglion Posted January 4, 2006 Posted January 4, 2006 I do agree that the level of officiating has seemed to dip a little over the past few years, but I'm not really sure as to what has caused it though. As far as blaming refs for a loss, I will very rarely do that unless it is warranted. Boyd Co, IMO, has lost every game for themselves, even though the game against JC was certainly affected by some of the calls and no calls made by the officiating crew. and contrary o what some people think, officials can negatively affect the outcome of a game.
LeeCoBobcatFan Posted January 4, 2006 Author Posted January 4, 2006 Oh yes, they can have a negative affect. I don't think it is "fixed" though like most believe. Every game, someone says that the refs have been paid off. Its kinda funny really.
pthsfan Posted January 4, 2006 Posted January 4, 2006 Last night at the Paducah Tilghman/Reidland game the officiating was fair, but terrible, they wouldnt call anything.
RonnieThePopular Posted January 4, 2006 Posted January 4, 2006 I think we should leave the refs alone. Their job is hard enough.
sixtyfeetsix Posted January 4, 2006 Posted January 4, 2006 It is extremely hard to find people who are interested enough in helping the High Schools out by becoming officials. They are not paid enough for their services, but most of them would do it for the love of the game. That's what I would like to see happen...more people becoming involved in the love of Sports! I agree with the guru on this one, we do not need to bash on any officials, since they are actually helping out these schools by getting involved.
HALL9 Posted January 5, 2006 Posted January 5, 2006 You could not pay me enough to be a ref! No matter what 90% of the time, you are going to have 1 side of the gym ready to mob you during and after the game!
RonnieThePopular Posted January 5, 2006 Posted January 5, 2006 No doubt they take a bad rap. I don't evny them at all. Im with you Hall9. There isn;t enough money for me to donn the stripes.
SKINPIG Posted January 5, 2006 Posted January 5, 2006 Although the officiating may not be the way we would like it, IMO VERY VERY few games are decided by the Refs.
Frances Bavier Posted January 5, 2006 Posted January 5, 2006 If someone has never officiated wants to disagree with a call, that is fine. No official gets all of the calls right, and disagreement is part of the game. On the other hand, to accuse a referee of cheating, betting on games, shaving points to effect the outcome of a wager, or intentionally missing calls is indefensible. If someone wishes to provide evidence of an official betting on games, cheating, shaving points, etc., then they have a moral obligation to report it. Anything else is nothing more than sour grapes, looking for a scapegoat to take the blame for a team that got beat. If an official misses a call with two seconds left, and that team loses by one point, don't blame the official. Go back through the course of the game, and look at every missed free throw, every turnover, every bad coaching decision, and every missed layup. Then blame the loss on the only two guys that never took a shot ... Do officials have bad games? Of course they do. Do some people have to cry "cheater" every time their team goes down in flames? I'd say that one is pretty self evident. Frances
