Is Thug a racial term?

Featured Replies

It is an unintentional racial slur. It's never used on whites. It's like the old black joke about when you see a swollen, ripped up, muscular white guy, you assume he's been working out at a gym. But when you see a similarly built balck guy, you assume he's been working out at a jail.

Let me be more clear. Nobody is assuming racism when the word thug is used to describe athletes. The racial connotation is suspect yes but as UKMF it seems to be a subconscious thing. Chip is saying let's kill it because it is getting out of hand.

And I do believe it is subconscious thing that I see describing blacks as it relates to this discussion. But do you think black America has promoted the term and embraced (eg. Tupac) and helped plant that seed? Kind of on a minor level with the promotion of the n-word in the black community in rap music.

Or a good basketball player he must have good fundamentals and footwork because heaven knows they cannot compete athletically.

Racial slur is stretching it. I think racial connotations is a better way of saying it.

I'll give you the N-word. I used it as a youth, but as I got older stopped less and less and don't do it anymore. But as far as Tupac, he used the term

The

Hate

U

Gave

Little

Infants

F&^ks

Everyone

Bascially saying hating little black children from the onset (ahem Trayvon Martin) is goign to cause a problem for everyone in the end. Wow, he said that in 1992, and 20 years later where are we. Arguing over whether the murder of a 17-year old, unarmed kid was justified.

He also made an acronym for the n-word: never ignorant getting goals accomplished. Message wasn't heeded either.

Cosby isn't the only one who feels this way. It is also more of a media thing but you see some instances of it outside of the media.

When Kevin Love stomped on Luis Scola's face and was suspended two games was he referred to as a thug?

I don't recall hearing Love being called a thug, but I also don't recall him climbing into the stands to fight a fan. My point is that I have used the term and it has never been exclusive to one race or another.

Athletes labeled thugs:

Black athletes with bodies covered with tattoos.

Andrew Bynum

Matt Barnes

JR Smith

Rasheed Wallace

Dennis Rodman

Anthony Mason

Larry Johnson

Stacy Augmon

Joakim Noah

Corey Brewer

Antonio Cromartie

Cam Newton

Kevin Garnett(though his reputation amongst blacks is that of a studio gangster)

Rick Mahorn

Charles Oakley

The kid that played for Tubby for one year and went in the game and reused to shoot.

That's just off the top of my head.

Only one white person comes to mind when it comes to being labeled a thug:

Bill Laimbeer.

Feel free to add to the list.

Only racist if it is allowed to be, does everything have to be either racist or politically correct.

The two terms I heard that are 98+% tied to blacks are "thug" and "athletic."

I don't think it's racist. It's just a term that whites now use to describe 1. mean black kids and 2. black basketball/football teams.

Couldn't one argue that the reason that these individuals/groups are being called thugs is because they are doing stupid/illegal/wrong things? Not because of race. In fact if they did not do the stupid/illegal/wrong thing they would not be labeled/called a thug?

Colin Powell isn't a thug, Ron Artest is.

John Gotti was a thug as was Sammy Gravano, both white mobsters.

Only racist if allowed to make it that way.

Chip's conversation is pertaining to the constant labeling of black athletes as thugs. Not actual thugs.

See post 26.

See post 26.

A thug is anyone who goes around bullying, pushing his weight around, treating others as inferiors.

Could be white,black, brown.

Every black kid that played for Bob Huggins at UC. See Huggs Thugs...

Can't believe I forgot about that one.
