Crossbar Posted January 3, 2006 Posted January 3, 2006 Where is the hardest place to play in the state?... Or in your region??
dubbbledribbble Posted January 3, 2006 Posted January 3, 2006 Paintsville. They are always tough and seem to catch just about all the breaks from the men in stripes....but BMR has put in the time to get the breaks I guess!!
SKINPIG Posted January 3, 2006 Posted January 3, 2006 Where is the hardest place to play in the state?... Or in your region?? It used to be Clay in the 13th but from what I've seen this year it looks like South Laurel is going to have zebras setting their picks for a while.
Crossbar Posted January 3, 2006 Author Posted January 3, 2006 I wasn't just talking about officiating... although that certainly comes into play... I was more talking about electric atmosphere which disrupts opposing teams.
BigStud Posted January 3, 2006 Posted January 3, 2006 While CCH has the best student section. I think if you count home court advantages. I think the toughest two places to play our NCC and HC, just on structure and complications that may occur.

Not quite!!! SL however is a very tough place to play at, and on most occasions its not at all because of the officials! The reasons however are numerous: 1.) The student section: It takes up 2 entire sections of the lower arena (sometimes more) and is as rowdy, clever, and distracting as any I have seen in quite a while! At last years state tourney it was the best by far IMO! The Cardinal Crazies literally took over Rupp Arena! This section also includes the band! 2.) Reserved seating + Great Fans: The way the seating in the gym is set up it makes it very difficult to find the fans of opposing teams! All sections of the lower arena on the side of the benches is reserved for SL fans with season tickets. This makes it very difficult for the opposing teams players and coaches to feel comfortable with SL's most supportive fans directly behind them. Most fans of the opposing team are forced to the upper arena unless they get to the gym in time to find a seat in one of the 3 sections of the lower arena across from the benches that isnt taken up by the student section or other SL fans without season tickets! This set up makes SL's gym appear as if the only fans their are SL fans! Not only this, but the student section isnt the only section involved in the game! SL's fans are as vocal, supportive, and responsive as any! Very good fan base! 3.) Tradition: When you walk into the gym the first thing you see on the far wall are the team pictures of all of the past state champions (girls and boys) as well as their regional and district championship banners! 4.) Red and Black: The entire gym is douced in a red and black color scheme that is very strong and the vast majority of the fans are clad in SL gear, which just goes to show that they are as supportive as I said in reason 2! 5.) Pregame music: When SL takes the court for pregrame warmups the PA system is blasting some the best, up to date pregame warmup music, and not only is it good basketball music but it is all coordinated with the on the court action. This makes for a great basketball environment that is first class. Whoever controls the PA for SL's home games should be commended because it is the best I have ever seen in HS b-ball. This reason alone makes SL's ENTIRE basketball program look first class and nothing is more intimidating then a program that looks and acts first class from top to bottom! 6.) The main reason: Sometime during warmups the last few minutes of last years radio announcing of SL's state tourney win at PRP in OT and their state tourney championship win is played over the loud speaker and the entire crowd is usually brought to cheers and applause. This is very intimidating to opposing teams when they look across the court and see virtually the same team warming up to play their ball club!
MilburnDrysdale Posted January 3, 2006 Posted January 3, 2006 Cordia High School. Hardest everything....
MountainThunder Posted January 3, 2006 Posted January 3, 2006 It used to be Clay in the 13th but from what I've seen this year it looks like South Laurel is going to have zebras setting their picks for a while. I was gonna say Clay County for several reasons, the main ones being the excitement of their fans, the tradition, and the passion they have for the program throughout the entire county. However, I wasn't gonna even mention the officiating, but since you brought it up, ... I find it bordering on hilarious that a Tiger fan would ever talk about other teams having officials helping them win games. Could there be a little jealousy having a new team to the region steal another's thunder? :sssh: I guess South can thank the refs for giving them last year's state title and if they win it again in 2006, they will have to continue sending out Christmas and birthday cards to officials throughout the state who have called their games the past few years to help them be one of the best teams in the state, even beyond the 13th region.
Crossbar Posted January 3, 2006 Author Posted January 3, 2006 Let's try to keep poor officiating out of this forum.
Crossbar Posted January 3, 2006 Author Posted January 3, 2006 Ice skating anyone???  Good point. If you haven't played here before, you won't know how to keep your footing. As far as atmosphere the nod goes to CCH with the student section as vast as it always is. Holmes is an intimidating gym because of its sheer size. Ryle is also thrown in this catagory as being the best gym in the 9th.

Boone County is probably the toughest place to play in that county, but I didn't even find that gym that tought. CCH student atomsphere makes it tough. NCC student section placement with the fact the physical structure makes it difficult. Holy Cross is smaller compared to most top 9th programs. In big game situations it limits the amoun of opposing fans in the gym and the closer atmosphere makes HC student section much larger than it is.
Bird Man Posted January 3, 2006 Posted January 3, 2006 The Fieldhouse I agree. Besides the regional game last year when Harrison Co. upset Mason Co. on their home floor, Mason Co. won something like 60 straight games there. Very hard to beat the home team at "The Fieldhouse."
Sandman Posted January 3, 2006 Posted January 3, 2006 In the Ninth Region, my picks are Holy Cross and Boone County. Hard for visiting teams to play well there for some reason.
