@JimBowdenESPNxm: "The Cincinnati Reds are prepared to guarantee a 6-year 72.5M to Brandon Phillips and I am predicting the deal will get done in the next 24 hours."

Utter shock....Does anyone actually think this is a good thing if true?

Could this be the same 5/$62.5M deal but with a 6th year team option or something like that?

more than likely yes. Is this a smart move for the on the field team, no. Is this a smart move to keep the fan base happy (at least short term) and show the fans, look were signing the guys you love, now show up...yes, I guess.

I really have no idea how much money the Reds have to work with. I'm always happy when they are able to keep their top players. We'll just have to wait, and see how the contract effects the Reds down the road.

Looks like it's a done deal..

GOOD DAY #Cincinnati... Just got to say, THERE'S NO PLACE LIKE HOME!!!! Looks like y'all might have to deal w/ me a little bit longer

Reds source: "We have agreed in principal to a 6-year $72.5m deal with Brandon Phillips pending ownership approval" unconfirmed.

Then limp on down and sign the thing.

I'm happy about keeping BP, but I certainly hope the Reds really are going to be increasing their payroll so they have pieces to go with Votto/Phillips in the future.

Deal is now confirmed. Hope this doesn't look terrible in 2 years.

As a Cardinal fan I love the deal for Votto and Phillips. It will be hard for them to pay many more players with those two lock up over 30 million.

I do like the fact that a small market team can keep their starts but at the end of those deals it will be tough on the teams.

I have nothing intelligent to say.

Nuts ... a crazy deal. Six years?

Who Cares?

I wouldn't say it's crazy but it's a bit much yes.

Paying Phillips $12M a year from ages 35-37 is crazy.
