Madson Needs Tommy John surgery

I think the Reds need to hold course with Chapman as a starter. He has looked good this spring. See what you got...

I think they may send Bailey to the pen or trade him since he is out of options and can't be sent to minors.

Is it a foregone conclusion that Mike Leake is the 4th starter? He hasn't exactly been lights out this spring either and I believe he has options.

Yes it is...

Tough break for the Reds. However, they do have a very deep bullpen so this shouldn't be a killer blow. There is usually bullpen help available near the trading deadline if they have to have it.

I am a cardinal fan but I still hate to hear this. Don't like to see anyone miss due to injuries.

Closers are the most overrated players by far. This hurts the depth but they will be ok.

Maybe they go with Chapman as a 5 and our new closer will be the hard throwing Homer Bailey...

Doc: The pain of Madson's elbow | Cincinnati.com | cincinnati.com

Now? Madson’s done, the Reds move Marshall into Madson’s spot, and the 8th inning just got dicey.

It’s easy to suggest the Reds didn’t do all they could to evaluate all of Madson’s arm. Dr. Kremchek disputes that completely. As amateur doctors and professional skeptics, we can take the good doc at his word while still shaking our heads and challenging the official explanation.

“We did our due diligence,’’ Dr. Kremchek said Monday.

The Reds, he said, gave Madson a physical in January and another when he arrived in Arizona. They did an MRI on his shoulder. They X-rayed his elbow. They did “full physical scans,’’ Kremchek said. “Everything was normal. “We did everything we’ve done the last 16 years. I don’t feel bad about what we did. I’d have done nothing different on this guy. Nothing.

“It wasn’t a degenerative elbow,’’ Dr. Kremchek said. He suggested that a man with a torn elbow ligament isn’t going to be throwing 94 mph fastballs, as Madson apparently did last week. But pitchers aren’t paid to be doctors. Maybe Madson felt the typical soreness and thought nothing of it.’
