Flipping through the report, I did notice that they had a breakdown for each state based on age.

 

Those saying it should be illegal or are unsure by age group:

 

For AL 18-45: 23%

For AL 46-65: 29%

For AL >65: 51%

 

For MS 18-45: 31%

For MS 46-65: 39%

For MS >65: 57%

 

Based on these results, the younger the person, the more accepting they are of interracial marriage. Not where we need to be, but not all is doom and gloom.

 

Why didn't MS voters get a MS/MSST question similar to the AUB/AL question?!?

No question. I would be curious to see the same questions asked in KY. My guess is we would be disappointed in the responses but it would not rise to the level of AL and MS.

Very good question, Bronc. I'm not sure you can change the minds of those that are already in this 1954/Gov Wallace mentality.

"Better is better" is how too many justify what's still going on. "Well, sure that's bad but it's getting better." Tell that to the guy who just had it happen to him.

I fully get your point, 75, and fully agree that things are getting better. It's nowhere near where it needs to be and when it's not someone is suffering.

And I would say he's not going to lose 250 lbs over night, if ever but at least he's trying. I think society is trying but in the words of one Tater Salad, "You can't fix stupid".

I say we strip them of their electoral votes until they come to the 21st Century with the rest of us. I also say we poll every state so we can see where all the dummies truly are. And also so my wife and I can make sure we are completely aware of our surroundings when we take trips throughout the country.

Actually interracial marriages weren't fully legal in the Unites States until 1967. Of course there were states that legalized it before then.

Personally, I see interracial marriage as sort of the last frontier of race relations in this country. There's no greater acceptance than to take another human being into your family, and the frequency with which families are now taking people of other races into their families bodes well for our society. 20 years ago when you talked interracial marriage, generally you meant a black man and a white woman. Why? Because women tend to be more open minded & less racist. But now days, I see more and more marriages of white men and black women, of all economic levels.

 

There will always be racism, coming from all sides, going in all directions. It's important that we continue to work against it, but it's also important that we understand it will always exist. Why is it important to recognize that racism will always exist? Three reasons IMO: 1) so that we don't let the existence of it keep ourselves from appreciating the progress we've made, 2) we don't overreact to what will always exist no matter how much we fight against it, and 3) to remind us of the base tendencies we as humans can fall back on if we don't pay attention to our thoughts and actions.

I saw something years ago but I don't think it was about being illegal, just if the person agreed with it or not. It was interesting a large percentage of each race did not agree with interracial marriage. This was probably in the early 90's so I'm not sure if I can find it online or not. It was recent enough that I was surprised by the numbers.
