Round 1 Easy Pick'Em Contest This is a new game that is open to everyone. The rules are simple. Each week we will select five games featuring teams from all areas of the state. Your job is to select the winner of each game. If you pick ALL FIVE games correctly, you win and earn a prize, NO TIEBREAKERS necessary. Belfry leads 42-0 at the Half, scores on first drive to make it 49-0, then pulls startes en rotue to 49-7 win.

Will they beat Breathitt in the re-match? Can they then make the drive to more than likely Belfry and beat the Pirates on their home field? Estill has went 9-1 but they have ZERO signature victories except for their win over Harlan County.

So you think Russell will beat Belfry @ Belfry in the 2nd Round?

I misspoke..Belfry was never ahead of bell in the Mountain Top 10..did some research and found that out.

Belfry has homefield advantage until the State Finals if they keep winning. I think a neutral field has merit, but it ain't going to happen this year. Belfry has a top notch facility with turf, if the other Regional Final teams want to play there that is fine with me. :lol:

Bell jumps Belfry, as does Johnson Central, when Belfry kept winning. Belfry beats JC yet does not reclaim the #1 spot?

...and yet further proof that the LIT Ratings are by far the worst ratings for KY HS Football out there, even worse than CalPreps and MaxPreps. Henry County the #4 3A team in the state?

I personally would go with "The Sky Falling" as having the better chance, just me personally.

Seems as though there has been some chatter interrupting other threads so lets hear it... Who do you expect to see in the 3A Finals? Will it be a re-match of last season with Belfry and Central? Who can knock these favorites off? Mason County, Breathitt, or Russell in the East? North Oldham, Elizabethtown, and Russellville in the West?

I am starting a new thread right now with you in mind so we can debate "who can beat who" in 3A as a whole.

They just beat the #2 5A team in the state on the road last night

Hard to argue against: #1 3A 9-0 vs. #2 5A 9-0 Full House Coach vs. Pupil EKY Bragging Rights Same Style of Offense With Both Teams Running It To Perfection Big Hits Fake Punt Changing Momentum Back and Forth Circus Catches Choosing to Go For 2 Point Conversion when an XP ties It Having that 2 point conversion get stuffed As soon as one team appears to have it sealed up they fumble That was Belfry vs. JC.... No game in the state was as hyped, with as many story lines, and with as good of quality of teams playing in a tight game that comes down to a last second Hook and Ladder attempt.

Matney said he didn't see it coming. "In all of the years I have coached against Belfry I have never seen him run a fake punt," he said. This quote in Josh Ball's article sums it up.

Also lost in all of this are: -Thomas Varney: The kid entered leading the state in yards per carry and JC shut him down, so how does Thomas respond? He plays fantastic coverage, he has three consecutive punts that pin JC inside the 20, including two inside the 10\, and on the game clinching drive he has the key run to set up the TD. Resilient effort by Belfry's X-Factor. -Ian Welch- JC would have had no shot in this game without Welch. Not only with his receiving skills and his circus catches in traffic which helped set up one of JC's scores. But how many times did this kid save the big play when Belfry's backs got in the second level? He also was key in shutting down Belfry's outside runing game. Truly one of the elite players in EKY. And of course: -CHARLIE DOTSON- Wow! What can I say? Belfry's FB/MLB played out of his head tonight. The Pirates constantly rode Dotson right up the gut behind JR Center Chancey Cisco and he constantly made key run after key run. When Belfry is successful on the FB dive and when Belfry is getting over 3 yards a play on 1st Down they are very tough to beat. Additionally, Dotson was all over the place on defense as he always is.

We have discussed at length about the two point conversion and about the squib kicks, but I want to bring up the decisions/plays that put Belfry in position to win this game. 1. First Half, 6-0 Belfry, JC has their first drive of the game going. The Eagles have it inside the Belfry 20 and are facing 4th and 1. Eagles choose to go for it and Belfry Freshman LB Gary Runyon, playing in place of another Freshman LB, makes a big stop to stonewall the runner. This secured a 6-0 lead heading into the half for Belfry. 2. 7-6 JC, Belfry driving, Belfry SR QB Andrew Elkins (remember who I say here) makes a costly mistake on a 3rd and 2 by making the wrong read on the option and choosing instead to pitch the ball for a 2 yard loss. Facing 4th and 4 Belfry converts the fake punt. 3. Same drive, Belfry punches in the TD and hold a 12-7 lead and Phillip Haywood makes his second gutsy call of the game. Belfry goes for two. Belfry runs the option again and this time Ivan Lee is stonewalled at the L.O.S., so Elkins pulls the ball out, makes the DE collapse, and pitches it to Varney. This time the PERFECT read as Varney walks into the endzone untouched. Now JC has to convert after the TD regardless if it is 1 or 2.

I'll give my thoughts tomorrow, but I am extremely proud in the respnse this Belfry team showed going on the road ina hostile environment and beating a very, very good JC team. Belfry doesn't get to relish being the underdog often (some of us Belfry fans like myself will sandbag as much as possible but that don't count ) but they played with a chip on their shoulder and knocked off one of the state's best teams regardless of class.
