Not correct by rule. It doesn't matter if it's a 1 yd forward pass. There is no "chuck" rule is HS football. The defender does not have 3-5 yds to chuck a receiever. Once that reciever establishes his route, he cannot be impeded.

I think the cut-block is pretty straight forward. The only place the cut-block is legal is in the free-blocking zone while the ball is in the zone. That's it!! It is not a cut-block if the block starts above the waist and slides down. I think the rule is pretty clear.

Then again, it goes back to the ready for play whistle and the 9yd mark. If he was inside the 9 yd marks after the ready for play then he is legal as long as he doesn't use a coach, trainer, or sidelined player to decieve the defense.

The only way it would be illegal is if the player uses a coach, trainer, or any other attendent in a pretended substitution to decieve an opponent at or immediately before the snap or free kick. That would include any of the "Wrong Ball" or "Argueing Coach" play or any of the various different plays meant to decieve the defense.

Correct.... The sub must leave the playing field immediately. But as far as "breaking the huddle with 12" , there is nothing in the rulebook stating this specifically. Rule 3-7-1: Between downs any number of eligible subs may replace players. Replaced players shall leave the field immediately. Usually the officials will know if either team has more than 11 players on the field and if we catch it at the snap, the penalty would be illegal substitution because the replaced player did not leave the field immediately. Now if the officials don't catch it until after the snap, then the penalty would be illegal partcipation. The Referee and Umpire should catch this before the snap since they are the ones required to count the offense. As a Linejudge myself, I am counting the defense with the Backjudge and Linesman. As long as the player is inside the 9yd marks at ANY point after the ready for play, it is legal. If not then it is an illegal substitution on the offense.

The district title will be settled after the 2nd week of the playoffs. This game was for playoff positioning only. The title is yet to be won by anyone.

There was not 1 unsportsmanlike penalty called tonight during this game. Although there was quite a few personal fouls called tonight, which is completely different penalty than an unsportsmanlike penalty. But the answer to your question is 2. A personal foul and an unsportsmanlike are 2 different fouls. A personal foul usually has to do with contact by a player and an unsportsmanlike does not. Although a personal foul can be ruled flagrant and an ejection made, there is no specific number of personal fouls that warrant an ejection.

I'd say about 90% correct. Hashes have nothing to do with the rule, nor does the snap. It's all determined by the ready for play.

Another thing about substitutions in HS......... I hear people all the time say.... "They broke the huddle with 12, They broke the huddle with 12". Well, that is not an infraction in HS football. No where in the rulebook does it say anything about breaking the huddle with 12 players.

I would have to see the play. Do you mean the WR instead on QB ran to the sideline and stopped? It's all determined by the ready for play whistle blown by the referee. After the ready for play has been blown, every player MUST be inside the 9 yd mark at some point. Obviously he does not have to stay inside the mark. Meaning a substitute can not just step onto the field and line up. He must go inside the 9 yd mark before he is an eligible player. If he does not go inside the mark, it is an illegal substitution penalty and the offense will be penalized 5 yds. About the play you questioned above....... If the referee had blown the ready for play whistle before the player ran to the sideline, the play would be 100% legal. The rule was put into effect for that sole purpose, to keep the offense from decepting by substituting a player directly onto the sideline.

The new one ......yes!!!! The old one........not so sure on that one.!!! The new stadium is truely great and is an incredible facility but The Vip could definately have used some work.

Starting last year, there is supposed to be a 9 yd mark off the sidelines on every field in the country who uses NFHS rules. There isn't always a mark on the field so the officials usually use the numbers if the field does not have a 9 yd mark.

No, this is not correct. He does have to be inside the 9yd mark(numbers in mark not there) at some point after EVERY ready for play whistle.

A couple of years ago the NFHS put in a rule concerning this type of play. On every field there is supposed to be a 9 yd mark from the sidelines. Some field have them and some do not but they are supposed to be there. If the marks are not there then the official usually uses the large numbers marking the field. Anyway...... At some point AFTER the ready for play whistle has been brown by the referee, each player HAS to be inside of those 9 yd marks off the sideline. In other words, he can not stay on the sideline after a play nor can he just step onto the field from the sideline. He MUST be inside the 9yd mark at some point after the ready for play whistle has been blown. I hope that clears it up for you!!!

No, the second pass is still a forward pass. It's just an illegal forward pass. Once the legal forward pass touches a player, pass interference restriction are gone. That is why there is no P.I. penalty but the second pass is still a forward pass and not a lateral.

Ok, we've had some really good responses to this play but here's the ruling: Legal contact by B1 and an illegal forward pass by A1. Pass interference restrictions for B players ended when the shovel pass was touched. B will likely decline the penalty and keep the ball. If the illegal forward pass is accepted, it is a 5 yd penalty and loss of down at the spot of the foul but A would retain the ball. This is a new rule change. In previous years the ruling would be completely different. Previously you would have defensive pass interference but with the new change the ruling is different. I like to see everyone's opinion on these plays. I really enjoyed trying to figure out the call on the TV segment.

Here's another scenerio for you football buffs to test your knowledge of the rules. Scenerio: On 2nd down, QB A1 drops back and throws an underhand shovel pass forward to RB A2 who is behind the neutral zone. A2 then tosses the ball back to A1 behind the neutral zone. A1 then throws the ball forward beyond the neutral zone to WR A3. Before the ball reaches WR A3, DB B1 knocks A3 to the ground and intercepts the pass which he runs back to A's 20 ydl where he is tackled. What is the result of the play? This is a situation play that I took directly from the NFHS casebook. I will post the correct response later this evening.
