West Linn out of Portlaand, Oregon is always a contender for 6A state championships. They always have DI players. When they called to inquire about coming to the KOB they ask, " How tough is the completion? Is it going to be good enough for us?" Well he has had two more but I am not at liberty to say who with at the moment but think about the decision the young man needs to make in the next couple of months. Does he stay at Home and attend X a top 25 program. Does he go to Iowa, Nebraska, Michigan, or a number of the other Colleges who have offered that you have read about in this thread. I know he would like to get into Coaching one day, so that might enter into his decision Going to be a nice ride for the young man and his family!

Sorry but you didn't hit a nerve, but you spoke out on something you obviously knew nothing about, as the bold shows from your own words I don't know, I don't know and I don't know!. Thacker was a player and a very, very good one and yes I am sure Grant had trouble getting games but he did play in the District, he did play in the 9th Region and indeed he played in the Sweet Sixteen not just once but twice. I can't speak about his 9th and 10th grade years but in his 11th and 12th, he was something to see.

These attachments are from the CovCath "Contact" the newspaper of Covington Catholic and were the 1st edition (September) of the new school year of 1967-1968 If you right click on the attachment and then open in a new tab, they are so very much easier to read. The article was written by Jack Bogaczyk who was later the manager of the UK Basketball Team. Jack then went on become a member of the Vir Sports Writers Hall of Fame. The 1st attachment Shows the team member of that 1st CovCath team. The 2nd attachment Shows some of the schedules of the local teams in the area, including the Dixie Heights Little Colonels. The last attachment show the newest Cheer of year 1967 for CovCath@ :-) and some fun stuff from back in the day.

The Bold is not true at all! Covington Grant won the Ninth Region and Thacker went on to play in the Sweet Sixteen in the following years. Thacker, Tom Porter Birth Year : 1939 Born in Covington, KY, Tom P. Thacker played basketball at William Grant High School there from 1955 to 1959. The 6'2" guard/forward scored 36 points in his final game, a loss to Olive Hill during the state high school tournament. Won the Ninth Region while Thacker attended and played 1958 Covington Grant 1959 Covington Grant

While Dave Cowens was a good HS player, most who were from his generation I believe will agree he wasn't one of the greatest HS players of all time. Now if you exclude the HS part then I would have him leading this group. Jim McDaniels was something to see and he played during the years of no dunking, I would have loved seeing him dunk on everybody and anybody in a HS game.

CovCath hosts Columbus, Ohio, St. Francis DeSales Sept 24th

Just to mention something I read while on vacation in Idaho while waiting to be seated for dinner, Idaho prep sports classification proposal weighs wealth, success | Idaho Statesman In Idaho they are thinking of not only using enrolment numbers to align schools into Classes, but also they are looking at economic wealth of each school system to align those Classes. What they were thinking or better yet what I got out of the article, was that it is a huge advantage that say (using NKy schools to make a point) Beechwood playing against Dayton, Ludlow, and Holmes. Beechwood I would say has a very low number of students who get free lunch, while Dayton, Ludlow and Holmes have a much larger portion of students who do receive free lunch. They are thinking of using enrollment numbers then reducing that number by a percentage who get free lunches to get an adjusted number of students to place that school in a class. True story about Coach Rasso. I can't tell you the year but it was either his last year at Cin X or the 1st year after he retired from Cin X anyway, My wife and I went over to her Mother home in Norwood and after the visit we went to Dewey's Pizza in Oakley to eat. We walk in and as always there was a wait period to get served for dinner. We sat down and a minute or two later Coach Rasso and his wife sat down right next to us. I knew that no way in heck would he remember me but I wanted to thank him for what he not only did for me but for CovCath so I introduced myself and he smiled and told me he was sorry that he didn't remember me but that those two years at CovCath where some of the best in his life. We proceed to talk for the next twenty minutes of back in the day CovCath Football and how proud he was of starting the CovCath program and how impressed he was with the CovCath Community. It was a very pleasant twenty minutes of reliving my youth at CovCath and that year of being on the CovCath Football team.

The reason in my mind was due to the lack of playing together. CovCath best players on offense that season, in my own humble opinion, were Bob Weick (RB) and Larry Erpenbeck (T) neither had played one single play in HS football before that season. Remember also, none, not one single player on that "67" team had played Varsity Football and none, not one single player had played freshman football either. Mex, consider this, image this upcoming 2017 season, a team that opens up without out one single player from last seasons varsity team. Image that team having only six seniors on it who have never played HS football before and having your entire Junior Class with only 1 year of JV football under their belts. What would you think their record would be? To be 5-4-1 in that first year was an amazing event, that I highly doubt could or would be done today. Defense is much easier to teach and learn, you react on the "D" side and especially back in the day you didn't have the complicated sets like you have today. That "D" indeed was tough with Steve McCafferty at nose tackle and Butler at MLB. I totally believe that the "67" team set a very high water mark, for the other CovCath classes to follow! With a Spirit, that will not Die!

Mark today (and has for years) helped run the clock/scoreboard at the CovCath football games and is looking forward to being in the new and much larger CovCath press box. If you have ever seen the movie We are Marshall, Mark was a member of that X team.

Bob of course didn't play in his Freshmen year at Brown, as back in those days, Freshmen weren't allowed to play sports. Bob indeed was a very smart student at CovCath and IMHO a better Baseball Player than Football player. I believe Bob now lives in RI and was/is a Lawyer, hopefully he and the other guys all show up for the reunion this year!

If you notice, they didn't play enough local teams to qualify to play in the playoffs.

No the 1967 First Varsity season didn't include HHS on the schedule, to the best of my memory.

CovCath JV did indeed play games at Ludlow in 1966 but the Varsity played at Covington Holmes in the first varsity season in 1967.

This is from my 1966 yearbook the only one I have, as someone back then was kind enough to give it to me, as I never had the money, back in the day to purchase a yearbook. Always makes me wonder, why so many people think everybody at CovCath is so rich. The pictures are from the World's Famous Chocolate Bar Pep Rally getting the student body ready to go out and sell those Chocolate Bars. If you look closely, the sign behind the kids in the football attire, reads: Only you can fill this football schedule and the Administrations meant it, if the goal wasn't reached, there wouldn't have been a team. "With a Spirit that will not Die!" Oh yea, the yearbook staff indeed screwed up! :-)
