  1. Congrats to a very good NewCath baseball team on winning what must have been a tense and exciting game.
  2. Very nice game and great effort by both teams. Both have peaked at the right time. Ultra clutch triple by Garrett Wagner to win the game. Good job by Jeff Hatfield to earn the victory.
  3. Great comeback by St. Henry in a sloppily played game that could have gone either way. St. Henry was down to two out and runner on first, down 4-2 in the top of the 7th inning. Dietz had gone the whole way to that point. Three straight clutch hits changed destiny. The leadoff hitter laced a double down the left field line to put runners at second and third. Then Grimme hit a hard one-hopper back at Dietz who gloved it enough to turn it into an infield single instead of game-tying single and make the score 4-3 and runners on the corners. Coach Wilhoite then went to Krohman in relief. Shanks knocked a soft liner to right that fell in front of the right fielder to tie the game at 4-4. Boone put two on after two out in the bottom of the 7th and then Shanks forced an inning-ending popup. The top of the 8th started with a BC error and then the floodgates opened as St. Henry finally started ripping the ball. The game was marked by some bad base running by St. Henry, a towering 3-run bomb by Corey Farris in the first to account for most of Boone's runs, too many errors by both teams. Exciting finish and congrats to both teams. Krohman took the loss and Shanks got the win. Congrats to St. Henry.
  4. Hats off to Conner and Senior Ben Wigger who threw a heck of a game with 4 K's and either 6-7 hits given up depending on the ruling on one play. Conner definitely came to play and both teams looked sharp. This was one great high school baseball game. Congrats to Vince Murray on a big 2-out, 2-run bomb in the bottom of the 5th to break a 4-2 tie. Ryan Hughes pitched very well again and probably only yielded 4-5 hits. Great flip play between Wagner and Humphrey to end the game. Both teams definitely played well enough to win. Congrats to the Raiders.
  5. Congrats on a strong regular season finish. Now, let's go have some fun and take care of business in the upcoming games.
  6. Giovanni Devita threw very well and it was good to see the leadoff man go yard to get the scoring started in the 9-run third inning. Ryle improves to 22-11.
  7. NCC just got done beating PRP, one of the top few teams in the state. They have 20 wins and are a solid team. I call this a quality win vs. a good team.
  8. Neither team scorched the ball consistently today. Ryle benefitted from some timely hitting from Robert Layne, Rainer Oliver and Jerrod Babik as the Raiders bunched together some walks and key hits to break open a 1-1 game. I think that the Raiders only had 5 hits and NC probably only had 3. Very good win for Ryle with two good teams hooking up. Jeff Hatfield had a nasty knuckle curve and pitched well with no earned runs over 6 innings to pick up another win.
  9. In the 33rd, Ryle won the district with a 3-0 record, while Boone beat Conner and lost to St. Henry, Conner beat St. Henry and lost to Boone and St. Henry beat Boone and lost to Conner. So all those teams end up 1-2. I understand that it is a blind draw for the 2-3-4 spots. In the 35th, Beechwood beat Holy Cross and lost to CovCath, CovCath beat Beechwood and lost to Holy Cross, Holy Cross beat CovCath and lost to Beechwood. Everyone beat Holmes. So, the lucky winner in the draw of the all important first seed gets Holmes in round 1. The losers of the draw face each other for the right to advance to the regional. Is this correct?
  10. Ryle's ace, Brent Humphrey, pitched four innings of one-hit ball to get the win. Highlands threw their ace, a big strong righty with a good #1 pitch. Control problems plagued the Birds as Ryle must have had at least 3 HBP's and 7 walks to go along with 6-7 hits. Garrett Wagner led Ryle's offensive attack with two knocks and two RBI's. Mark Guttridge had the biggest hit of the game with a double to right center to open the scoring in the bottom of the third after a two-out walk and stolen base by Jerrod Babik and a HBP of Wagner. Vince Murray then laced a single to left to plate Guttridge and the Raiders controlled the rest of the game, leading 8-0 before the Birds dented the plate versus Giovanni Devita, who pitched the last three innings. The Raiders played sharp defensively again.
  11. Bankemper pitched very well and had excellent control. His great control was the key and he fielded his position well, too. Ryle's pitchers threw very well, too, holding the Beechies to 5 hits - we just got bit by Chris at crunch time and he definitely went down to get a tough pitch. It was certainly a great game to watch even though we lost.
  12. It may have been an Excedrin or 911 moment. That would have been a great play for video watching the fence get detonated.
  13. 7 errors was probably generous for those of us who watched the game. Just one of those nights. Old guy is correct in rescinding his statement about the one error. The infielder made a good effort to try to catch the ball and it was definitely a throwing error on the pitcher.
  14. Super baseball game between two very solid teams. It is so nice to see a high school game with no errors, some nice plays, kids giving it everything they had like running through a fence to catch a fly ball, etc. Hats off to Chris and the Beechies. Great day for a game and great game.
  15. It was good to meet a guy who I guess is older than me. I am not normally accused of being nice so I appreciate that compliment.
  16. Ryle hit the ball well in addition to CovCath's defensive miscues. It seemed like half of the errors just gave extra bases to runners who were already on base.
  17. Lefty Ryan Hughes picks up the win in relief. Both teams hit the ball well but the difference was on the leather side of the field. For whatever reason, the Blue Colonels had a bad day with a combination of throwing and fielding errors to give up extra bases and runs. Ryle was very sharp in the field. I would guess that Ryle had 12 hits and CovCath probably had about the same. Vince Murray and Garrett Wagner led the Raider attack with 3 hits and Rainer Oliver had 2. Blaze hit the only dinger of the game with a shot to center in the first for CovCath. I can't imagine Coach Krump's post-game speech.
  18. The weather forecast doesn't look very good for this week so I would think the Tuesday game is in jeopardy. Old Guy, if the game is on, I will take care of bringing the ingredients for Raider Burgers if you tell me you will be there. Others will then benefit from your request and please introduce yourself, too. Have a great week!
  19. Mary is more consistent because she grills them all the time but the Raider Burgers were pretty mean. They would probably win a taste test. It might take a separate thread about best burgers. Great bunch of families and kids at Ryle and a good time was had by all!
  20. The Raiders clinch the 33rd district #1 seed with a tough win vs. the Cru. St. Henry is probably kicking themselves in the hind end as they had a few miscues and allowed too many bases on balls to win a close one. They hit the ball better than we did today overall. Ryle executed some small ball well. Cru jumped out to a 3-0 lead and I think the Raiders tied it in the 4th and went ahead for good in the 5th. Brian Weis came in and had runners at 2nd and 3rd with 1 out in the top of the 7th nursing a 5-3 lead. Brian coaxed a sacrifice fly and pop out to the catcher to end the game. Jeff Hatfield pitched well again for the Raiders over 6 and 1/3 to pick up the win. Good job, Raiders!
