Your correct. I got my sports and thrown out of a game's mixed up. I apologize to the Panda's and the forum. Dixie's volleyball head coach however did get carded and was out for 3 games. It happened, of at all places, a JV tourney at Scott. He actually didn't even know it happened until after the weekend when he (or the schools AD, I don't remember which), received a letter from the KHSAA. It was a strange thing. The ref yellow carded him for standing during the match, because he wasn't at the captains meeting prior to the start. Then red carded him after that for coaching from the bench apparently. Play never stopped and none of our kids or parents even knew it happened.

I know last season NDA's coach got a red card and had to sit out 3 matches. This year Dixie's coach got one and had to do the same. In both cases they had to leave the building. I think it happens more than you might think.

I know every kid is different, but when my daughter played against Ryle and the kids called her name or celebrated her mistakes she loved it. It fueled a desire to shut them up with better play. LOL

It's not a true "State Championship" from a KHSAA perspective, and it is invitation only as far as I know.

It's a tough question, and I think on a regional level the local coaches association has a chance to get it right more than the state overall. Also, I would think that the better your coach is at marketing their players the better the chance one of them can win an honor on a team. The big four's players will always garner more attention than any other schools kids just because those programs are so strong. An example of a player not at a premier school would be Jessica Tapp at Scott. She's a very worthy candidate for a state wide list, but I'm not sure that every coach in KY would have any idea that she is that good. And if the coaches don't know, who would be a better option? No one I can think of.

Game 1 - The night got off to a rocky start for the Colonels, as the Camels of Campbell County jumped out to an early 10-1 lead. Eventually Dixie started to fight its way back, and got within four at 11-16 before Campbell went on another 5-0 run. That would prove to be as close as Dixie would come, grabbing a few points late in the match to finish 18-25. The set was never truly in doubt from start to finish, and gave the appearance of a very long day ahead for Dixie fans. Game 2 - Thankfully our volleyball players have very short memories, as this one was contested early and often, with multiple lead changes. Dixie led for most of those lead changes, and this time it was the Camels who couldn't quite finish. Game 3 & 4 - It's amazing what a little confidence from a win can do to a teams game play. In sets 3 & 4 the Colonels passing in serve receive and on defense led to more in system hits by Long & Metzger, and more free balls and out of system attacks by the Camels. Set three was a feel good moment for the home team, in a season with very few feel good moments, as the Colonels cruised to a 25-11 victory. Yet being Colonels the fans and the kids new better than to celebrate just yet. Set four started out with Dixie rolling to a 15-5 start, and for most of folks in Red a sigh of relief, assuming we would finish this out like the last set.... We all know what happens when you assume, right? To my dismay the Campbell Co.'s girls weren't done. Off the break the Camels went on a tear and fought to bring it within 2 at 16-14, and 17-15. But somewhere in the middle of those two point margins the momentum shifted, and Dixie's aggressive serving and powerful hitting switched gears.. With the pressure Dixie's offense applied, the Camels offense couldn't seem to gain traction behind middles Hannah Graf and Grace Isaacs. Long rally's continually fell in Dixie's favor and over the next few minutes the gap widened. In the end Dixie posted a 25-17 victory to end the contest. Next up for the Colonels are the Braves of Grant County on Thursday night at home. Campbell County plays Simon Kenton at home also on Thursday night. Game time for both matches is set for 7:30 PM.

I'm not sure NKY will ever treat volleyball like they do in Louisville. It would be nice, but the realist in me says its never gonna happen. It would take a complete cultural shift.

Private school kids aren't necessarily more athletic, but they are more talented in volleyball. There is a focus on sports at private schools. This focus has kids start competing at the kindergarten level in organized programs geared to teach fundamentals. In third grade the start competing against other schools. All the while, these kids are encouraged to join club volleyball. There is no overall true focus on sports at a public school, nor is there an emphasis on excellence outside of the classroom. Public school kids are left to figure it out on their own. Many do, but not to the degree that private school kids do, which is why they will never compete until a cultural change takes place. Private schools - typically are tied to a church/parish or a group of church's/parish's. Because of this, parents typically consider the school an extension of themselves for life, and therefore they stay active in the school system for years and years. They are encouraged to stay involved. Typically they are k-8, and feed one HS. Public schools in my area generally are k-5 (elementary), 6-8 (middle), 9-12 (high school). Typically parents move from one piece of the education system to the next and never look back. There is no knowledge transfer, no volunteerism, no sense of belonging to something more, and nor is it encouraged. Bring on the next crop of lemmings! And if you live in Kenton Co, the kids get split into different Middle and High schools along the way, so you don't even have a direct line to your final destination. Add to this that the high school, middle school, and elementary schools all have their own principals, athletic directors, and coaches who don't share a common vision, or in most cases don't even speak to one another about a combined strategy, and the disadvantage grows even larger. Yet in spite of that, public schools still manage to turn out athletes which would make any private school envious. It's not a genetic thing. Private school kids aren't superior, they're just better organized

Volleyball is a sport in which it takes years of practice to become really good at. Most of those years, and most of that quality instruction takes place on the club level. Private schools have programs which start kids in Kindergarten. Public schools begin indoctrinating their kids into the sport in the 6th grade. Private schools emphasize sports and academics. Public schools emphasize academics and sports are an after thought. Unless we go to a multiple class system for volleyball, it will remain a private only championship. It is what it is, and the KHSAA could care less. They don't think the systems broken.

Ok.... So in summary you refuse to refute anything I said other then to lecture me about "elite" players. I'm judging by your comments that the only scholarships worth having are D1, so anyone with a D2, D3, NAIA or JUCO aren't worth mentioning. Ill keep that in mind. Good day.

Congratulations on your good fortune, however it doesn't change the truth of what I said. "Elite" players are rare, so if those are the only players we are going to speak of it's going to be a short conversation. D1 consists of 15% of scholarships. Elite D1 is around 2-3%, depending on your definition.

And 30+ years of the same few schools winning the state championship is just a coincidence .... Nothing broken with the volleyball championship .... Huh

My friend.... you need to learn more about the recruiting process. Yes, the studs of the top 50 programs are generally recruited by sophomore year, but that leaves a lot of kids waiting till Jr or Sr. year. Also with the carousel of coaching being what it is there are many scholarships that get rescinded and offered all the way until Jr. or Sr. year. The recruiting game has changed..... a lot. Mid Major D1 and D2 don't generally start offering until Sept. Jr year, and that doesn't even start to begin talking about NAIA and D2.

Volleyball needs classes.... Period How many more years of domination do you need before you change it. Football went from 4 to 6 classes for less reasons than exist in volleyball.

I forgot to mention that Dixie's JV won in straight sets. Both of which were very tight and down to the wire.

Wow, I'm not sure what purpose you all feel your serving. There is no reason to drag a kid you've never seen down.... just let it pass. I do. I don't slam kids I haven't (or in some cases, have) seen. I brag on ones I have that I feel are worth mentioning, and applaud them regardless of affiliation. I don't know Borders from adam, never met the parents, cousins, or neighbors. But I know she's a good setter, and one of the top in NKY. The fact that a kid is not a signed recruit as a senior only tells you the kids is an unsigned senior. Signed sophomores and Juniors tell me mom and dad got on the recruiting ball early or on time, not that unsigned seniors are not worth signing.... Not everybody's parents pay NCSA as 8th or freshman to market their kids. Not every program has a recruiting adviser. And not every team plays venues where most college coaches are at. Most parents have zero clue how recruiting works. It's been said that she IS being recruited and hasn't decided.... isn't that enough????

It was a great night to watch a volleyball match in Campbell County last night, and the players of both teams didn't disappoint. All five sets were highly contested, but in the end the Dixie Colonels came out on top. In the beginning of the fifth set there were a few anxious moments for the Colonels when Sr. Kylee Fowee and Fr. Leah Metzger collided while going for a ball, with the freshman taking the brunt of the collision. But after a few minutes with the trainer, Metzger was cleared to return, and ended up scoring the final point of the match. "This was a huge win for us," said Sr. Setter Emma Alkofer. "With Districts around the corner, I know we need to keep pushin to get better and better, but I'm gonna cherish this one first for a few minutes." Dixie Jr. Perrin Long led the Colonels in scoring with 20 kills over the Bishop Brossart Mustangs. Fr. Leah Metzger had 18 kills, 14 digs and 5 Aces, and 8th grader Stephanie Coyle had 6 kills on 8 attempts. So libero Lila More had 13 digs and 2 Aces Next up for the Colonels are the Campbell County Camels on Tuesday evening.

I kinda missed imputing names for the St. Henry kids because I don't know them as well and wasn't keeping up with which hitter was doing what. Understandably I was somewhat in shock to see Dixie compete as well as we did in that first set and it kinda through me off. lol SH's libero impressed me and one of the other DS's. They didn't let much hit the floor. Also they have a few hitters which can elevate pretty nicely as well. Perrin Long for Dixie had a nice night too, along with Sr. Emma Alkofer at the serving line in the third set. Due to injury Metzger had to play setter for the Freshman and JV teams before playing OH/DS for the varsity. Both teams setters were hurt last week and we have no one else even remotely capable of taking over. It was the first time in three years that Leah has ever played anything but varsity. When asked after the match if she was tired she said "no, I could've gone five sets no problem." Coach Long regretted the necessity to ask her to do it. " I should've remembered when I asked her to help us out that Leah only has one speed. I was concerned that she would be wore out before the varsity match even began, but I watched the elevation of her jump serve and court speed all evening, especially at the end of the third set, and it was consistent. Playing at an elite level in Club ball prepares you for things like this. Thank God. Not many kids could do what she just did." It was obvious to me that St. Henry was the better team. Coach Kaiser's reputation as one of the top coaches is well deserved. Her teams looked very polished for the most part, and her staff is top notch.

All that is true... however just this season I have witnessed refs call a double on first contact.

Comparing anyone to Mica and Penn State is difficult, so I didn't do that. I merely used an example of a great hitting team and a great setter to express how Borders game isn't necessarily only because her team needs offense. Being an attacking setter is a skill that can be used regardless of your surrounding players.

Sorry if you misread my statements intention. I agree about Bush and what a middles role is. I also think your dead on with the ball control comments. What I was trying to say, is that if it was as simple as running a slide to get Legg and Ryles offense moving, Hailey and Tasha/Andy and staff would be doing that.
