Why? What keeps a public school from competing in the current system? I'm not overly familiar with HS Volleyball.

The catholic high schools DOMINATE the sport.

 

No public school has EVER won the state title, since the inception of the state tourney in 1979. For that matter only Greenwood in 2011, only because of the "luck of the draw", has EVER made it to the title game.

Volleyball is a sport in which it takes years of practice to become really good at. Most of those years, and most of that quality instruction takes place on the club level. Private schools have programs which start kids in Kindergarten. Public schools begin indoctrinating their kids into the sport in the 6th grade. Private schools emphasize sports and academics. Public schools emphasize academics and sports are an after thought.

Unless we go to a multiple class system for volleyball, it will remain a private only championship. It is what it is, and the KHSAA could care less. They don't think the systems broken.

Assumption, Mercy, Sacred Heart and NDA are the only schools that are contenders, probably in that order.

 

What has it been 20+ years since NDA has won? They have had some great teams. Louisville is one of the premiere areas of the country for volleyball.

Many of the public schools have made progress catching up to the majority of the pack. However, as stated above, the 3 from Louisville and NDA are currently so far ahead of the rest that I don't see anyone outside that group challenging in the next couple years.

 

However, our memories do tend to be short term. St. Henry made the trip from the 9th in '04, '05, '06 and '10. And while NCC was in the 10th region they played champion Mercy closer than anyone else in a state semi-final match. The tide can turn, but as it stands now, the volleyball elite has a very limited membership in the state.

Give it time. Soccer and fast pitch were under developed in some areas years ago. Couldn't find a soccer team in NKY when I grew up. They now compete.

I'm not sure NKY will ever treat volleyball like they do in Louisville. It would be nice, but the realist in me says its never gonna happen. It would take a complete cultural shift.
