Cooper 3 Ryle 0

Featured Replies

Anyone have some insight to this one? I know Cooper beat them pretty soundly this weekend at the Dunbar tourney, but I didn't think Ryle would lose to them a second time?

Set 1: Cooper took a 6 point early lead and never looked back. Played very well. Ryle's libero let two balls fall in between her and another player in serve receive. Very unusual.

Set 2: Ryle held lead most of set forcing Cooper to take both time outs. Cooper storms back late to take lead and finish with 2 point win. From what I remember Ryle was up at one time 19-15 in this set.

Set 3: After letting set 2 get away Ryle never really recovered. As long as Cooper served away from Ryle's libero, then they were getting diggable balls and scoring out of transition. Cooper earned a lead and held it. Ryle's libero again let a couple balls drop in this set. Very un-Ryle like errors during the set.

Overall, IMO and observation over the past couple weeks, Cooper has gotten better, Ryle has declined a bit. Ryle's sets were out past the poles for their outsides, and the middles constantly hit through the middle of the court making easy blocks and digs. Ryle's big middle only had a few kills with none of them really being shining hits. She was blocked or had hits blocked up and playable on most swings. Timing seemed off on most middle attacks. Again something that shouldn't be happening this late in the year.

Coopers setters struggled at times due to BHE and bad setting decisions.

Katie Smith and Ruepel(sp?) played outstanding. Ruepel's defense was surpurb. Bush for Ryle struggled and was inconsistent. Only saw one of her jump serves make it in the court. Bush did have one hit that I thought knocked out Cooper's setter there for a few seconds. Scary moment.

Again, IMO and observation from last night and what Conner did to Cooper a couple weeks ago, the 33rd district is up for grabs. Anyone on any night in this district can win. Let's not rule out Boone County on this either. They could catch fire and make a run, especially with their setter.

Three things---I thought Cooper's coaches sucked? How is it that the team is now "playing better" and obviously improved? Could it be that certain players decided to get over themselves (and their disdain for the coaches) and just play the game? Kids gotta play for THE TEAM to win.

(***DISCLAIMER-I was not at the match. My comments are based on previously watched matches)

Totally do not understand why Ryle is not running a 5/1 with H. Bush? Davis is a trained DS and should be given a chance at libero. When almost everyone agrees that ball control is Ryle's biggest issue, switch things up for Pete's sake. Davis is going to college as a DS, put the jersey on her. Bush attacking on second ball is as effective As her hitting right now...

Finally...why does Legg (TX MH) not hit on the pins off serve receive? Makes no sense...besides Bush ( whose percentage has to be down this season) she is strongest hitter (Stinson too inconsistent) and needs to be used to side out. At least give it a try.

Ryle's coaching decisions have baffled me over the years but after watching 4 matches this year, and no real substantial changes, I had to comment. Use your personnel in the best way to help the TEAM

By the way BHE=Ball Handling Errors

Wow, region 33 now is in a 3 way tie as Ryle, Cooper, and Conner are now all 2-1. It should be an interesting playoff. You can't count Boone out either as they have beaten Conner in a tournament. 1st place is up for grabs for sure.

I agree totally with your Ryle lineup comment. Not sure why they haven't made changes. Definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again even if it isn't working. I also agree with your comment on the big MH for Ryle. Every ball she hit or was set during the match was in the middle third of the net. Put her on the pins, run some X's, slides and/or tandems, something to get her out of the direct middle or to get blockers to move around. Ryle set three types of balls last night high outside, middle of net, and opposite to the outside of the pole. No real tempo or mixing it up. They were offensively stagnant and the ball control was not that awful last night.

wxyz...I could not agree with you more here. Volleyball is a game of controlling and bettering the ball. Bush does little to no good as an attacker if she's hitting out of system over and over. Improve the ball control with Davis in serve receive and improve all setting with an elite Big 10 recruited setter. We aren't in their practice gym but it seems like that highly qualified staff isn't adjusting to its personnel.

Ball handling error. Aka double contact or lift on the setter.

Tasha is not a newbie coach... and Hailey Bush isn't a below average setter.... if their team was capable of more offensively it would be being done. I have no doubt that they are operating at the ceiling of their teams capabilities. Why they have chemistry issues I don't know. But you don't win games offensively by engaging your middles unless they're Rachel Adams, you win by setting your outsides. They have two good ones in Bush and Stinson. Stinson led the team in kills last season. Bush is a beast. Figure out how to feed the OH and things will turn around.

I understand that you don't win games through your middle game. But if you do not have solid, consistent middle game then your OHs are consistently going against double blocks and defenses can defend against OH and OPP much easier. With no middle game, then a defense can go to a commit blocking scheme and eat OHs alive. Ryle will figure something out. They always do. Cooper knew exactly where and who that ball was going to and Ryle didn't answer.

Rupple continues to stand out on this team. Her defense and serve receive was very strong last night. Smith is still one of the dominant players in the district. Balls outside the pins for both teams at time. There were numerous ball handling mistakes for both teams - some called and some not. I thought the libero for Ryle and Cooper both looked strong. District play could be very interesting. It will all depend on who shows up. Boone County has one of the strongest setters in the region and they play with a lot of heart.

I wouldn't say Alli Borders is one of the strongest setters in the region. She is forced to be their #2 hitter on the team as a setter, so she constantly dumps and pushes the ball over. I wouldn't say that makes her a strong setter, but she definitely loves to compete.

When Borders has the passes, her sets are on the money. Great hand position, footwork and speed.

I disagree with your analysis of Borders game. Penn State had plenty of hitters last season, but Mica Hancock was as much of a scoring threat as any of them.

Also, I think our region has some great setters.

Talkers - NDA

Bush - Ryle

Borders - Boone Co.

Atwood - Conner

Noll - SHDS

I'm sure someone can make a case for Freppon - NCC, & Ogle - Beechwood too

. Isn't Coach Lovins on maternity leave? I'm sure they are looking forward to her return.
