I think the dead period ends July 10th, so they can start tomorrow. And most places have had open gyms I think, including SK. Dixies tryout starts the 15th.

So you support what I said from the beginning about public schools not placing an emphasis on sports, and therefore that is why private school athletics often eclipse public school programs in organized sports.

All true, except its worse than you described, volleyball in private schools starts in Kindergarten with NKYVC's sprinkles. Lets face it, us Catholics have large families. What are the chances that a private school kindergartener has an older brother or sister who has already started with their own early indoctrination into sports and extra curricular activities? I'd say pretty good, which is why NKYVC's sprinkles program is so popular at the young ages. Private school parents want their kids to excel in the classroom and out, so they typically do anything that will give their kid a leg up, even if its just a leg up on the other kids in the same classroom. Because of this, and not that private school kids are superior athletes, it is my opinion that public school girls often don't make elite volleyball teams at the 13's level. Not making a 13's Open team at this age creates a spiral, where the kid never gets the top notch coaches, isn't surrounded by top notch talent, and doesn't play against top notch competition. In essence, a public school kid who waits to get serious about volleyball until 13 is 7 or 8 years behind some private school kids.

I think I've been pretty clear about describing the culture in NKY schools toward sports at the young ages. Having a public school kid myself who started playing club ball at the age of 8 quite by accident, I can attest to the fact that if it wasn't for a chance meeting with a private school parent who knew about club volleyball we might never have ended up playing this great sport to the level we have. Private schools encourage early participation and excellence in sports, public schools as a whole do not. There are some small pockets of kids in Boone Co where this not necessarily true, but overall in Kenton County it is. If you wait to begin your volleyball career in club till 6th, 7th, or 8th grade, how likely is a kid to be an elite player in your opinion.

So it's merely coincidence that over 90% of the kids on the teams you mentioned are private school kids or kids from ohio.... huh.

It's basically the same design of a logo from when I was in school, but the C is in a different font. I remember it from Art class. Not very imaginative, and I actually like the original design better, but I like it better than the swoosh. I was never a fan of the "New England Colonels" helmets we have now. lol That's what they always reminded me of.

I'm actually not doom and gloom. I believe that our public schools have just as many, if not more, athletes than any private school. I am merely trying to point out that our elementary and middle schools do not put as much an emphasis on getting kids involved with sports at an early age. Our elementary schools have 3rd & 4th grade basketball, while private school kids have basketball, baseball, softball, and volleyball starting in kindergarten thru 8th grade, and are also steered toward participation in soccer and football too. It is a cultural thing.... public schools don't really even start to get remotely serious about a few select sports until 6th grade, while Private school kids start getting serious about sports in kindergarten. Yes both are at a "rec" level, but I will guarantee you that on the private school side lines those parents are talking about which Select, Club, AABC, or AAU team they are going to either try out at or go back too for another season long before public school kids get to middle school.

Thank you for your time first off, and my statement is not a condemnation of yours or anyone else's efforts to succeed. But I do believe your wrong if your try to say that our public high schools have elementary and middle school feeder systems that place an equal emphasis on sports that parochial schools do across the board. Heck we barely have any sports at the elementary level. We have 4th and 5th grade rec level basketball, and generally to coach a team it requires a parent who's main qualification is that they're willing to show up. The fact that your ok with the state of sports at the feeder levels speaks to the problem. I will concede that last year we had a very good football year in Kenton Co, and that the middle school programs there have made an impact, but please don't quote Scott going to State in volleyball as a sign of success. They would have never made it out of Region 9 if they had to go through St. Henry, Ryle, Cooper, and Notre Dame. Depending on where they were placed, they might not have made it out of district play. The same could be said for SK and Scott in all district, region, and state appearances. They don't have to go through the Catholic Schools up here to win a regional and with a good draw they don't see them till a semi final.

lol, that's not condescending. Are you saying that Catholics are the only athletes of superior quality in NKY? Never mind, I reread your answer and that's exactly what you said... I disagree. Public schools in NKY do not place an emphasis on sports... not at the elementary or middle school level, not like their counterparts in the parochial systems. And Public schools at the high school level are not much better at times, and those that are are severely handicapped by the lack of a quality feeder system. Typically in public schools at the Elementary and Middle school levels when a school is searching for a coach or athletic director, the job might as well be posted solely in the teachers lounge. They do not seek out the best candidate unless they CAN'T find one internally who wants the gig, and that candidate for the most part need not have any prior experience or understanding of the game they are about to teach to the kids. In elementary and middle public schools there are no athletic booster organizations to speak of, and if you find one they function more like a fundraising branch than one that actually has input into the athletic process. There is no pressure to win, no pressure to succeed, and certainly no pressure to actually teach the kids the game. I'm not saying that some aren't successful, or that some don't try, I'm saying that all you need to do to get the job is already be on staff in most cases. That's not right. I'd love to see a public school county in NKY that wanted to succeed on the court and field as much as they do in the classroom. The results would be eye opening for people who think such as you.

I truly dislike the KCBOE's stance on coaches. I believe it's more important to have the best possible candidate than to provide teaches with additional income. I'd love to see a petition started to bring this to their attention, because I don't know one person who's kid plays sports that thinks the current system is the right way to do things. It's probably also the number one reason public school sports are so inferior to parochial school sports.

It all depends on needs. Right now teams are holding open gyms,not practices. I'm sure it will be over looked with all the club commitments these kids have.

I agree. And please don't take this the wrong way. I have heard that the coach at Cooper is very intense/demanding/... and it rubs a lot of the players the wrong way. Maybe the kid will be back when they have time to think about it. I hate seeing kids give up 1 of their 4 years for any reason.

lol You're right, 9 returning players. I believe Noble, Noll, Schrieber and Tobler were all on the floor during the regional final. Not sure about the others.

St. Henry has eight returning players on varsity. Four seniors (Ashleigh Noble, Lehmkuhl, Krauss, and Gurren) left. 8 Paige Noble OH So. 7 Dani Noll OH/S Jr. 9 Madison Read DS So. 12 JoAnna Rebitski MH Jr. 2 Kayla Riegler MH Jr. 6 Kassidy Schreiber L Jr. 5 Brooke Shea OH Jr. Savanna Stevie So. 3 Janelle Tobler MH/OH Jr. I'm not sure how many JV/freshman kids from last season are in serious contention for a Varsity jersey this year but I would have to think that the well isn't completely dry. We will see in July I guess.

Stanford released their recruiting class for 2016 and Morgan's name was on it.

I heard this a while back to. Very happy for her. Going to UK as a walk-on had to be a tough decision, as I'm sure she had offers to go elsewhere.

The majority I believe played for various teams at NKJV, but a few played at Crush. I'm not sure how many were on 1's teams. I agree, it was a strange article. I always attribute things like that to colorful journalism.

Some might argue otherwise, but I would say yes. Let's put it this way.... recently a college coach was recruiting a player I know... the coach said a great many complimentary things before adding, "Look, If Stanford calls, I completely understand, you're going to Stanford, but if not, I'd hope that you'd keep us in mind."

I guess when Penn State is in the mix you have to think about it long and hard. I thought I heard she was Stanford bound a while ago. Nice to see that she's taking her time with the decision. Obviously based on her making the 20 player USAV GYNT roster she has unlimited options, but it doesn't get any better than those two.

Morgan Hentz has been named as one of the 20 players from which the USA Girls Youth National Team will be chosen from. Congratulations Morgan, it's a well deserved honor.

Great opportunity. UC Clermont is technically a JUCO right now, but you can attend for 4 years and get a degree while playing volleyball. They are petitioning to join NAIA soon.

I don't disagree that girls volleyball is the best women's sport, bar none. I like it better then the men's game. But not all parents have transitioned as readily as we have. For instance, there are a lot of girls playing for Shining Stars and Kings up here in Campbell county, not to mention those in "Select" softball. Today's top athletes are being courted or forced, (depending on how you look at it), into playing "Select" "AAU" or "Club"at a very early age in order to keep up with the Jones's. If mom and dad expose their little Janet to one of the top three traditional sports, (Softball, Basketball, and Soccer), chances are if they're a decent athlete they will get an invite to a Select or AAU team and then the kid is stuck in said sport because being a better than average athlete they will excel. Middle school girls of today play a given sport 10 months out of the year between Select/AAU/Club and school, maybe more. Add to that that sports seasons overlap, which makes it hard to try something new. I will concede that overall Volleyball is winning the battle for girl athletes though.
